Paris Saint-Germain FC vs. Olympique Lyon
As every year, one of the most anticipated matches in Ligue 1 is upon us: Paris SG hosts Olympique Lyon at the Parc des Princes. Last year, Lyon won here thanks to a goal from Tino Kadewere and caused a surprise. This year, the Parisians will do their utmost to ensure history does not repeat itself, especially as they need to redeem themselves after a disappointing performance against FC Brugge in the Champions League.
Lyon, for their part, have been steadily gaining momentum in recent weeks and there is every reason to believe they can give PSG a good fight. Our PSG – Lyon prediction now tells you whether we think the visitors can win a point and what other predictions we would make on this game.

PSG Form & Balance Check
Nothing was more beautiful than the onslaught of Neymar, Mbappé and Messi on the pitch at FC Brugge this Wednesday, at least on paper. Indeed, the Parisians, outclassed at every level, received a lesson in courage and sacrifice from their Belgian counterparts and can even consider themselves lucky to go home with a point. So in Messi’s first CL appearance for PSG, the fans were visibly disappointed. In this kind of game, PSG are expected to dominate the proceedings.
PSG must show a reaction
Critics were quick to fault the defence for being too lax and a general lack of commitment. Moreover, many did not hesitate to question the efficiency of this “All Star” team. Nevertheless, one has to put things in perspective by remembering that there were absentees and that the automatisms in this team are not yet fully formed. The game against Lyon comes at the right time now, because the Parisians need to react now. And what better way to do that than a game against the 2020 Champions League semi-finalists?
PSG Facts & Analysis
– 15 points from 5 games
– Last 4:0 win against Clermont
– Mbappé in danger of dropping out
– Won 4 of last 5 duels with Lyon
Lyon form & balance check
After more than a month and a half of competition, a smile has finally been seen on Peter Bosz’ face and we understand him! While Lyon had a series of disastrous performances at the beginning of the season, they finally found their way back to winning ways and even won their last three games. The first game against Nantes was very difficult, but OL still got the three points. The last two games of the club from the Rhone kept hopes alive with two solid performances against Strasbourg (3:1) and Glasgow Rangers in the Europa League (0:2). The latter was Lyon’s best performance of the season, and the team once again showed what they can do in an important game.
Lyon must become more consistent
Lyon’s new additions (Emerson, Shaqiri and Boateng) and the return of Jason Denayer in central defence have given the team a new look of late, while Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta are becoming increasingly important players. This is a team with great potential, capable of upsetting any opponent. But Olympique Lyonnais’ great weakness, as we all know, is its consistency.
Lyon facts & analysis
– 8 points from 5 games
– Last 3:1 win against Strasbourg
– Won last two games
– Also started with a win in the EL
Predicted line-up – last update on 18 September 2021
The first uncertainty in the Parisian ranks revolves around the presence of Kylian Mbappé. The Bondy-born player suffered an injury in the game against FC Brugge and although the initial diagnosis is reassuring, there is no guarantee he will be at the Parc des Princes on Sunday. PSG also continue to be without Marco Verrati and Sergio Ramos for this match. The Italian’s absence has been detrimental in the Champions League and his coach will definitely miss him in this game. Nevertheless, PSG can count on the return of Idrissa Gueye and Angel Di Maria, who were both suspended in the Champions League. The Argentine will be very important if Kylian Mbappé cannot keep his place.
Ander Herrera was also one of the few who was satisfactory on Wednesday and should probably be back. Furthermore, the likely absence of Kylian Mbappé could lead to a shake-up of the squad, with Messi taking the false number 9 position and leaving the right side to his international partner Angel Di Maria.
The OL team is likely to be the same as the one that competed in the Europa League on Thursday. Thus, the use of Moussa Dembélé, Thiago Mendes and Léo Dubois is still uncertain, while Tino Kadewere and Jeff Reine-Adelaïde are out. But while Dembélé is likely to resume his place in the forward line if his thigh permits, Peter Bosz may think twice about fielding the weakened Léo Dubois in place of Gusto, who shone against Rangers on Thursday night.
