Man United Form & Balance Check

Manchester United have fallen on hard times in recent weeks. They have drawn three of their last five games and suffered two defeats. They have now gone seven games without a win and are in a desolate penultimate place in the form table. Only bottom-placed Sheffield United are worse. This has consequences in the overall table. Two matchdays ago they had to relinquish their Europa League place and are now in eighth place, three points away from their upcoming opponents and sixth-placed team.

For Manchester United, the last matchday was once again very mixed. They faced one of their toughest opponents at home against Arsenal. United were basically very solid in the first half and the Red Devils tackled with passion, especially in the center, to get themselves into the game. However, an individual mistake by Casemiro gave the Gunners a 1:0 lead in the 20th minute.

Manchester United remained well in the game after the break but, as so often this season, lacked compelling forward play, partly because Arsenal were incredibly compact and defended well. The score did not change in the second 45 minutes, meaning Man United remain without a win for the seventh game in a row

Good conditions

However, the Red Devils love playing against Newcastle United. Man United have won 19 and drawn nine of their last 30 home games against the Magpies. Newcastle have only won twice away from home. Added to this is the goal difference, which from United’s point of view is 65:25. If they can build on this form, a win against the visitors would certainly be possible

Man United facts & analysis
  • Only two defeats in the last 30 home games against Newcastle
  • Eighth in the table
  • Form table penultimate place

Newcastle Form & Balance Check

Newcastle faced Brighton & Hove Albion on the final matchday. They struggled against the mid-table side in the early stages and conceded a deserved goal in the 18th minute to make it 1-0. The Magpies then woke up and showed their better side. They managed to score the psychologically important equalizer just before the break.

After half-time, both teams created a few chances, but Newcastle lacked accuracy in their finishing. The game was characterized by many fouls and the flow of play was frequently interrupted. This was another reason why the score remained 1:1, which is unlikely to help Newcastle in the race for Europe.

Newcastle are the antithesis of Man United at the moment. They have won four and drawn one of their last five games and are now unbeaten in seven. This puts them in third place in the Premier League form table. Only Arsenal and Man City are in better form than Eddie Howe’s team. They now have it in their own hands in the battle for Europe and could eliminate their direct rivals from the race with a win.

Away horror

The Magpies’ away record is particularly frightening, however. They have only won five of their 17 games away from home, drawn twice and lost ten times. That puts them in a dreadful 15th place in the away table, just four points away from theoretical relegation. For a team with European ambitions, that is of course far too little

Newcastle facts & analysis
  • Away table 15th place
  • Unbeaten in seven games
  • Last game draw

Erik ten Hag is currently struggling with injury concerns and will have to make a few changes to his 4-2-3-1. It is questionable whether Casemiro will start at center-back again after two terrible games. Kambwala would be an option for him. Fernandes is likely to return in midfield, with McTominay moving to the more defensive midfield position alongside Mainoo. In attack, the coach has the option of Diallo or Antony. Garnacho and Hohlund will be set.

Eddie How will probably field the same starting eleven as last weekend in a 4-3-3. He will still be without striker Wilson (thigh injury), who will be replaced by Murphy, as in previous games
