Manchester City – Tottenham Hotspur
Two exciting matchday 7 catch-up games are on the agenda in the Premier League during the week. Manchester United, who are in extremely good form, visit Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening (Crystal Palace – Man United betting tips), and Manchester City host Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium one day later at 21:00. Our Man City vs Tottenham betting tips will tell you what our predictions are for this top match.
Spurs could achieve something historic on this day. In the last season, they won both duels with the Citizens, which meant they were responsible for 67% of all defeats of the eventual champions. Now Tottenham could become the first team ever to win three league games in a row against a team coached by Pep Guardiola. The Spanish coach could go three league home games winless in a row for the first time ever in his coaching career after a 2-1 defeat to Brentford and a 1-1 draw with Everton.

Man City Form & Balance Check
Manchester City are still far from top form since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. From the four league games since the resumption of play only seven of twelve possible points jumped out – for the own claims of course too little. The only home game against Everton ended in a 1-1 draw on New Year’s Eve. Away from home, Pep Guardiola’s team won at Leeds United (3-1) and Chelsea FC (1-0) before losing 2-1 at arch-rivals Manchester United.
In the derby, Jack Grealish gave the Skyblues a 1-0 lead shortly after coming on as a substitute (60th), but four effective minutes in the closing stages were enough for the Red Devils to turn the game around, secure their fifth league win in a row and close the gap on the reigning champions to one point. The Citizens, in turn, are now eight points behind current league leaders Arsenal FC, who won 2-0 at Spurs a few days ago.
More predictable with Haaland?
It is doubtful whether the Gunners will maintain their current level until the end of the season. The battle for the championship is therefore still completely open, provided that the star ensemble from Manchester promptly regains the consistency of recent years. However, the critical voices are getting louder that the once unpredictable team is somewhat easier to defend due to the transfer of Erling Haaland. It remains to be seen whether tactical genius Pep Guardiola can come up with something to counteract this development.
Man City facts & analysis
– 38 points from 18 games.
– Last lost 1:2 against Man United
– Picked up 7 points from 12 since the World Cup
Tottenham form & balance check
As if the recent 2-0 defeat in the North London derby to arch-rivals Arsenal FC wasn’t bitter enough, the result was overshadowed by scandal. A Spurs fan had tried to kick Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale in the back after the final whistle on Sunday as he went for a bottle behind the goal. Spurs naturally distanced themselves from the incident and announced further consequences.
But it was also the next setback in sporting terms for the 2019 Champions League finalists. After five wins from the first five home games of the season, four of the last five matches at the Tottenham Stadium were lost. Only the clash with Leeds United has been won 4-3 by Antonio Conte’s side in that period.
Much more consistent away
When things don’t go well at home, the points have to come from away and at least that has worked very consistently so far. Harry Kane & Co. have only lost on foreign soil this season at Arsenal FC and Manchester United. Most recently, the 2-2 draw at Brentford FC was followed by a 4-0 win at Crystal Palace. Spurs have also been surprisingly successful at the Etihad Stadium, picking up four points in their last three visits to Manchester.
Tottenham facts & analysis
– 33 points from 19 games.
– Last lost 0:2 against Arsenal
– Won 4 of last 5 duels with Man City
Predicted line-up – last updated on 17 January 2023
Pep Guardiola could well make changes after the 1-2 derby defeat. Possible starting eleven candidates are wildcard goal scorer Jack Grealish, Ilkay Gündogan and/or Aymeric Laporte. Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and/or one of the two centre-backs (Nathan Aké & Manuel Akanji) could make way. The other two centre-backs John Stones and Ruben Dias are expected back promptly, but not yet in the upcoming game.
For Spurs, Ivan Perisic and Richarlison are the most likely starting eleven options. Mostly the same team will be on the pitch as in the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal. The only absentee is Rodrigo Bentancur, who is suffering from an adductor complaint.
