Mainz -Wolfsburg Tip
The teams are currently almost level in the table. Wolfsburg are in seventh place with 20 points, while Mainz are just two places behind with two points less. The season histories have also been very similar on both sides. Both Mainz and Wolfsburg got off to a good start before things started to go steeply downhill from matchday 6 onwards (three and four defeats in a row respectively). Recently, however, the teams have stabilised again and we can be curious to see who will ultimately make the more stable impression in the duel on Saturday.
Mainz Form & Balance Check
After four games without defeat before, FSV Mainz 05 suffered their first defeat since the 3:1 in Dortmund on matchday 8 in Stuttgart (2:1) last weekend. Viewed over 90 minutes, the victory of the Swabians is also in order. The Mainz team was a little too passive throughout the game and rarely had any danger in front of the opponent’s goal. Against Wolfsburg, Mainz want to show a different face in their own stadium and ideally remain unbeaten for the fourth home game in a row.
No win against the Wolves again?
The statistics, however, are rather not on the side of the 05ers. Mainz have only won one of their last eleven Bundesliga duels against VfL – namely the one on matchday 34 of last season (2:3 in Wolfsburg). However, the Rheinhessen side have not won any of the last five encounters in front of their home crowd. In addition, the Mainz side has lost some of the defensive stability that distinguished them at the beginning of the season. Most recently, they conceded at least one goal eight times in a row (12 in total). The last time they conceded a longer series of goals was from September to December 2020.
Mainz Facts & Analysis
– 18 points from 13 games
– Last lost 2:1 at VfB Stuttgart
– Won only 1 of last 11 duels with Wolfsburg
– 17 goals scored – 11 different scorers
Wolfsburg form & balance check
VfL Wolfsburg have five competitive games in 14 days starting with the game in Mainz. The Wolves are therefore facing a very decisive phase of the season. Will they spend the winter in the Champions League and also put themselves in a good position in the Bundesliga for the second half of the season? In a fortnight we will know more about this. In any case, the performances of the last few weeks suggest that there could indeed be a successful end to the year.
Wölfe in Mainz again without conceding a goal?
After Florian Kohfeldt took over, the Wolves initially won three competitive games in a row before things went downhill again recently with the draw in Bielefeld (2:2), the defeat in Sevilla (2:0) and the 1:3 loss against Dortmund. Nevertheless, the chances are not bad that the turnaround will now be initiated again in Mainz. As mentioned in the first form check, Mainz has been one of VfL’s favourite opponents in recent years. In the last three away games in Mainz, Wolfsburg did not even concede a single goal. Only at Arminia Bielefeld have the Wolves ever had a longer series without conceding a goal (5).
Wolfsburg Facts & Analysis
– 20 points from 13 games
– Last lost 1:3 against Dortmund
– Last 3 times no goal conceded in Mainz
– Won only 1 of last 4 away games
Predicted line-up – last update on 2 December 2021
Mainz are missing Jeremieh St. Juste, Anderson Lucoqui and Dominik Kohr due to injury. The starting eleven is likely to be largely set in stone, with only Jae-Sung Lee and Anton Stach still to be decided.
Koen Casteels’ fitness to play is still questionable after his Corona infection. Luca Waldschmidt could return to the squad, but is not yet an option for the starting eleven. Otherwise, the long-term injured Xaver Schlager and Bartosz Bialek are still missing. Instead of Dodi Lukebakio and/or Lukas Nmecha, Renato Steffen and/or Yannick Gerhardt could also play.
