FSV Mainz vs. Union Berlin
On Matchday 2 of the Bundesliga, there are only two duels in which two clubs play each other who have each started the new season with a win. One of these duels will be played on Saturday from 15:30 at the Mewe Arena, where FSV Mainz 05 will host 1. FC Union Berlin.
In their 16 Bundesliga seasons, Mainz have started with two wins in a row only three times, most recently in 2013/14 under coach Thomas Tuchel. Since the more difficult part – the away win – has already been achieved, the chances are not bad that Mainz, who are usually extremely strong at home, will score three points for the second time in a row on Saturday. However, the Berliners have also made a strong start and will do everything in their power to claim the next points in the second game.
We have analysed the teams thoroughly in the run-up to the match and, based on our research, have made three predictions for the game. Our Mainz vs. Union Berlin betting tips will tell you which ones they are.

Mainz Form & Balance Check
Just like last season, FSV Mainz 05 have made a successful start to the new season. Some will remember, back then, the 05ers were able to win 1:0 against RB Leipzig on matchday 1, completely surprisingly, with a corona-conditioned Notelf. On matchday 2, however, a 0:2 defeat followed at the then promoted VfL Bochum, who were defeated 2-1 in the season opener this year. Karim Onisiwo (26th, 77th) scored both Mainz goals last weekend. Anton Stach has directly set up a goal in each of his last four Bundesliga games this season.
FSV a power at home again?
The successful start definitely whets the appetite for more, after all, FSV were extremely weak away from home last season and took their points almost exclusively at home. Especially the defence was incredibly difficult to defeat at home in the Mewe Arena. In 2021/22, Mainz conceded just eleven goals in their 17 Bundesliga home games and played to nil on nine occasions – the top score in the Bundesliga in both cases!
It remains to be seen, however, whether the team can once again bring such stability to the pitch. With Niakhaté, St. Juste, Kilian, Nemeth and Lavalee, five centre-backs left the club in the summer. The only new signing was Bochum’s Maximilian Leitsch, who formed the back three together with Alexander Hack and Stefan Bell on matchday 1. As things stand, however, these are the only three nominal centre-backs in the squad, so FSV would be well advised to make further additions at this position before the transfer deadline.
Mainz facts & analysis
– Won 2-1 in Bochum on matchday 1.
– Won 3:0 against Aue in the cup
– Lost both duels with Union last season
Union Berlin Form & Balance Check
On Matchday 1, 1. FC Union Berlin proved right away that the number one team in Berlin still comes from the eastern part of the capital. After three derby victories in the 2021/22 season (2x league, 1x cup), the Eisernen also won the first capital derby of the new season (3:1). The Red and Whites were the dominant team from the first minute and could have taken a 1:0 lead much earlier than in the 31st minute. After 54 minutes, it was finally 3:0 at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei and the game was decided.
The FCU continues where it left off
Union are now unbeaten in eight Bundesliga games (7S 1U). The last defeat came on 19 March at Bayern (0:4). The final spurt of last season was extremely successful and the departure of top scorer Taiwo Awoniyi hardly seems to have hurt the team, as newcomer Jordan Siebatcheu does not seem to need any start-up time. He scored his team’s first goal in each of his first two competitive games for Union. In Mainz, he should now help them to record their fourth away win in a row. Three away wins in a row (4-1 at Hertha BSC, 2-1 in Leipzig and most recently 4-1 in Freiburg) are already a new best in the Bundesliga for the Berliners.
Union Berlin facts & analysis
– Won 3:1 against Hertha on matchday 1.
– Won 2:1 in the cup against Chemnitz
– Won last 3 away matches
Predicted line-up – last update on 12 August 2022
Jonathan Burkhardt will also miss matchday 2 due to a muscle strain in his thigh. In the 3-4-2-1 system, double-packer Karim Onisiwo will therefore once again play the only striker. Otherwise, we expect only one change. The returning Silvan Widmer will most likely replace Edmilson Fernandes on the right wing.
The Berliners could start with the same eleven that was allowed to start in the capital derby. Right winger Ryerson could at most be replaced by Niko Gießelmann. The only absentees are Timo Baumgartl (testicular tumour) and Fabio Schneider (knee ligament tear).
