Our Mainz – Stuttgart betting tip is: Mainz under 1.5 goals – 1.53 odds

  • In the last eight direct duels in Mainz, Mainz only scored more than one goal against VfB once
  • Mainz has trouble scoring without Burkardt – only one goal in the last two games
  • Stuttgart has conceded a maximum of one goal in the last seven games

On Saturday at noon, FSV Mainz 05 will face VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga at the Mewa Arena. In terms of the table, the two teams are only four points apart: While Mainz is in sixth place with 28 points, the Swabians are four points ahead in fourth place.

For the first time under coach Bo Henriksen, the FSV is experiencing the feeling of two defeats in a row. On the last match day, there was a 1-2 defeat against Union Berlin, followed by a 0-1 defeat against Leverkusen. At home, however, there have been four wins in a row recently. Stuttgart, on the other hand, have currently won three Bundesliga games in a row, including an impressive 4-0 win over SC Freiburg on the last matchday. During the week, they also beat Bratislava 3-1 in the Champions League. They have also won their last two league games away from home – find out which winning streak will end first in our Mainz v Stuttgart tip.

Mainz Form & record check

The form curve of 1. FSV Mainz 05 is currently changeable. Most recently, the team had to accept two Bundesliga defeats in a row for the first time under coach Bo Henriksen. Mainz last experienced a similar negative streak in January/February 2024 under Jan Siewert. The last time there were more than two defeats in a row was in September 2023 under Bo Svensson (four defeats).

Despite these setbacks, Mainz remain a force at home: the Rhine Hessians recently won four Bundesliga home games in a row – for the first time in two years. With a possible fifth home win, the FSV could equal the club record from the 2021-22 season. However, Mainz will be without top scorer Jonathan Burkardt, who is out with an injury. With twelve goals this season, he was the team’s most dangerous player last season. Currently, Mainz has scored with only six different goal scorers, the lowest in the league. No Mainz player has scored more than five goals this season.

Amiri as hope

Nadiem Amiri is one of the bright spots in Mainz’s offense. With his fourth goal of the season, he has already equaled his personal record from the 2022-23 season. With a total of six direct goals (four goals, two assists), he has surpassed his previous year’s statistics.

In direct comparison, it is striking that Mainz, with an average age of 28 years and 36 days, has one of the oldest starting lineups in the Bundesliga – only VfL Bochum is older. In view of the difficult personnel situation and the low scoring chances away from Amiri, Bo Henriksen faces the challenge of stabilizing the defense and finding offensive solutions.

Mainz Facts & analysis
  • First two defeats in a row under Henriksen
  • Four home wins in a row
  • Top striker Burkardt missing

Stuttgart Form & record check

VfB Stuttgart continue their impressive Bundesliga season and are undefeated in nine meetings against 1. FSV Mainz 05 (six wins, three draws). This is the longest streak against a current first division club. The last time Mainz beat Stuttgart was in January 2019, when they won 3-2 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Nick Woltemade has been impressively efficient, scoring six times since matchday 10, at least twice as often as any other Stuttgart player. With a goal every 100 minutes, he has almost broken every club record, with only Serhou Guirassy (every 99 minutes) being more efficient. Deniz Undav is also in top form: in his third Bundesliga appearance in a row, he was directly involved in a goal (two goals, one assist). With seven goals this season, he is just behind Ermedin Demirović (eight goals).

The team also impresses with its youth: with an average age of 25 years and 96 days, VfB Stuttgart has the youngest starting eleven in the Bundesliga.

A season of records

With 32 points after 18 games, VfB Stuttgart has the same interim result as in the championship season of 2006/07. Only in the previous season did Stuttgart collect more points at this point (34). This means that Sebastian Hoeneß has recorded the best interim results as a coach since the 2007 championship season. VfB’s form has been particularly impressive since the 11th matchday: 19 points from eight games (six wins, one draw, one defeat) mean second place during this period – only Bayer 04 Leverkusen was better (24 points).

Stuttgart’s latest success means they have now won three Bundesliga games in a row for the first time this season. The team is also performing strongly away from home, with two wins in their last two away games – as many as they managed in their nine previous away games combined. Stuttgart have also been excelling individually: Anthony Rouault became the 14th different scorer this season – only Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt have more (15 each).

Stuttgart facts & analysis
  • Unbeaten in nine games against Mainz
  • Best two starts to the season since the championship under Hoeneß
  • Five wins in the last six games

We expect Mainz to play in a 3-4-2-1 system again under the direction of Bo Henriksen. After his suspended ban, the Mainz coach will be back on the sidelines himself, but we could see changes in the defense, as Da Costa and Kohr each scored a goal in the last game.

Sebastian Hoeneß VfB Stuttgart could be seen again in the 4-4-2 system. In the attack, he is still spoilt for choice, as all three VfB attackers are in good form.
