Mainz Form & Balance Check
If the 05ers continue as they have done so far, then staying in the league should probably only be a matter of time. Mainz are currently swimming on a wave of success and last Friday’s victory against Borussia Gladbach made it clear how ice-cold Mainz are currently acting. Almost every shot was a goal and thanks to the victory, Mainz are now in a fully deserved eighth place.
A look at the bare figures shows how well things are really going. For the first time in two years, the 05ers have won three games in a row. The 32 points after 22 match days are also the best haul in seven years. In the second half of the season, only Dortmund have collected more points than Mainz 05.
Mainz’s new home strength
Mainz know that especially their performances in the first half of the season in front of their own fans were not exactly the best. Recently, however, the MEWA Arena has developed into a real fortress. Mainz have won three times in a row in front of their own supporters. With regard to the upcoming match against TSG, all eyes will once again be on the South Korean Lee. The offensive player gave Mainz a 1-0 lead in each of the four home games in 2023. With seven goals and three assists, Lee is Mainz’s top scorer this season.
Mainz facts & analysis
– Won 4 of last 5 matches.
– Last win with 4:0 against Gladbach
– Currently in 8th place
Hoffenheim form & balance check
So slowly but surely things are getting tight for TSG from Hoffenheim. The club from Kraichgau is the only team in the Bundesliga that has yet to record a win this year. Even the change of coach from Breitenreiter to Matarazzo did not bring the desired reaction. Under the new head coach, there have only been defeats so far.
This was also the case on the last matchday, when TSG hosted BVB. Even though the 0:1 result was much better than the last one, the team lost again. Hoffenheim has now lost five games in a row. The slide to 16th place is the logical consequence.
Who should score the goals?
From TSG’s point of view, it is now really inexplicable why their own team scores so few goals. In the last seven league games, TSG only managed to score seven goals. Another problem area is the defence. While the defence was still quite secure in the first half of the season, Hoffenheim are conceding far too many goals in the new year.
Hoffenheim have already conceded 41 goals. On Saturday, another rather unloved away game is on the agenda. So far, Hoffenheim have only won two and drawn two of their ten away games. The remaining six games were lost.
Hoffenheim facts & analysis
– Last 5 games lost
– Last lost 0:1 against Dortmund
– Ranked 16th with 19 points
Predicted line-up – last updated 3 March 2023
Mainz are on a roll and coach Bo Svensson will also see no reason why there should be any changes to the first eleven. Mainz will try it again in a 3-4-2-1. Zentner will again play between the posts, giving him preference over Dahmen. Otherwise, everything will remain the same for Mainz. Lee, Oniswo and Ajorque will start in attack.
TSG Hoffenheim will play a 3-5-2, and coach Matarazzo wants to strengthen the midfield. Geiger and Delaney need much more access in the centre than recently. Bebou and Kramaric are expected to provide a breakaway.
