FSV Mainz vs. Hertha BSC

Before the winter break, there will be another English week in the Bundesliga. Matchday 16 will be played next Tuesday and Wednesday, before three weeks off after Round 17 at the weekend. Among the four matches on Tuesday is the clash between FSV Mainz 05 and Hertha BSC, which kicks off at 20:30 at the Mewa Arena in Mainz. Our tip for this match can be found in the following Mainz vs Hertha tip.

The Mainz team has continued its high-flying form under Bo Svensson so far this season and is currently in eighth place with 21 points. At the same time last season, the 05ers were in last place with only six points. Hertha have recently seen an upward trend under new coach Tayfun Korkut, but remain embroiled in the relegation battle. 18 points and 14th place mean they are just two points clear of the relegation places.

Mainz Form & Balance Check

The Mainz team has undergone an impressive development since Bo Svensson took over last winter. Already in the second half of last season, the 05ers were one of the league’s teams with the best form, and things are going really well so far this year as well. In eighth place, the Rheinhessen side are keeping clear of the relegation zone and continue to convince with team unity and strong-willed performances. In Mainz, football is currently being worked on and the points tally speaks for itself.

Moderate yield of the last weeks

Despite decent performances for the most part, however, the results in recent weeks have not been all positive. Mainz have only won one of their last five Bundesliga matches (3:0 against Wolfsburg) and have also lost two of their last three games. FSV was beaten 2-1 in Stuttgart and also failed to win in Munich on Saturday despite taking the lead at one stage. Onisiwo had given Mainz the lead at the record champions, but Coman and Musiala were able to turn the game in favour of Bayern, so that this game also ended 1-2 in Mainz’s favour.

Mainz facts & analysis
 – 8th place in the Bundesliga
 – Last lost 1:2 in Munich
 – Only 1 win from last 5 matches

Hertha form & balance check

The change of coach seems to be having an effect at Hertha for the time being. Tayfun Korkut took over the reins from Pal Dardai a fortnight ago and has since picked up four points. In Stuttgart, the Hertha team showed morale after being 2-0 down and at least managed to secure a point, and against Bielefeld on Saturday they got their first three points. After an uneventful first half, Jovetic and Selke scored to give Berlin a 2-0 victory. Now the capital club also wants to score in Mainz and continue the positive trend before the winter break.

The double top works

Korkut has already collected one big plus point, especially with the fans. Because the coach, with his more offensive approach, offers the clear contrast to Dardai’s pragmatic and results-oriented football. Korkut has also been able to get more out of his attacking personnel, for example by using Stevan Jovetic and Ishak Belfodil as a one-two. Jovetic scored three goals in the two games under Korkut, two of which were set up by his strike partner Belfodil. The two summer additions harmonise splendidly with each other, but were rarely able to prove it under Dardai.

Hertha Facts & Analysis
 – 14th place in the Bundesliga
 – Most recently won 2-0 against Bielefeld
 – Under Korkut with 4 points from 2 games

Predicted line-up – last update on 13 December 2021

For both teams it is open whether there will be a slight rotation due to the English week. For Mainz, Boetius could come in for Barreiro or Lee, and Niakhate is also injured. Should the captain be absent, Nemeth should be the replacement. On the Hertha side, Pekarik is likely to be replaced by Zeefuik again, while Ekkelenkamp and Maolida are also options on the wings. Tousart is also an alternative for the starting eleven.
