FSV Mainz – FC Augsburg

The Saturday conference has a lot to offer you again on matchday 20. The Bundesliga is back with five games at the same time. In Rhineland-Palatinate, two table neighbours meet on Saturday afternoon. FSV Mainz 05 will receive FC Augsburg. Find out who will be higher up in the table at the end of the matchday in our Mainz vs Augsburg tip.

Mainz is playing a very mixed season this season. Good performances are often followed by disappointment in the next match. Last weekend, Mainz lost 2-1 to Union Berlin at the Alte Försterei. The 05ers are currently in twelfth place in the Bundesliga.

One place behind the Mainz team is FCA. Augsburg has also played a very changeable season so far. FCA had a good run in the league at times, but also went eight league games without a win. However, the Fuggerstädter won the last two home games, most recently with 1:0 against Gladbach and Leverkusen.

Mainz Form & Balance Check

Mainz 05 had a brilliant start to this Bundesliga season. In the first eleven games, FSV conceded only three defeats and were in sixth place in the table after a 5-0 win over 1. FC Köln. However, this was followed by six Bundesliga games in a row without a win.

A fortnight ago, however, the Mainz team managed a 5:2 home victory over Bochum. Last weekend, however, FSV lost at the Alte Försterei in Berlin. Coach Bo Svensson’s team kept up well with the Eisernen for a long time, but ultimately lost 2-1. Mainz are now in twelfth place in the table.

With headers to success

Mainz’s playing philosophy is physical, with them focusing on winning the ball and getting into an advantageous position quickly. This sometimes involves a bit of rough play. Indeed, FSV is the team that commits the second most fouls in the Bundesliga.

Furthermore, Bo Svensson’s style of play focuses strongly on crosses. So far, the 05ers have brought the third most crosses of all Bundesliga teams into the vicinity of the opponent’s penalty area. To make even better use of these, Mainz signed Ludovic Ajorque from Strasbourg in the winter. The Frenchman is 1.97 metres tall and will probably be the target of one or the other cross in the Rückrunde.

Mainz facts & analysis

 – Currently in twelfth place in the Bundesliga table.
 – Four points less on the account than last season at this time
 – Only two home wins this Bundesliga season

Augsburg Form & Balance Check

Augsburg FC have had many different phases this season. Augsburg lost four of their first five games of the season, only to then win three games in a row and beat FC Bayern, among others. However, this was followed by another eight games in which FCA only picked up a measly three points.

However, the Fuggerstädter won their last two home games. FCA beat both Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen 1:0, but in the intervening away game against Freiburg, Augsburg was beaten 1:3. In the table, FCA are therefore in 13th place.

Augsburg storm lull

Augsburg are struggling to get through in attack and have scored just 24 goals in 19 games. This is one of the lowest goal yields in the league. Only Hertha, Stuttgart and Schalke have scored fewer goals. Augsburg scored more than two goals in only two Bundesliga games this season.

In winter, FCA also sold Florian Niederlechner, still their third-best goalscorer, to Hertha and brought in 20-year-old Dion Beljo as a replacement. It remains to be seen whether this change was a good decision. So far, Beljo has not scored in his four games for the Fuggerstädter.

Augsburg facts & analysis

 – Away without a win since the beginning of October
 – Currently in 13th place in the league
 – Top scorers are Demirović and Berisha with six goals

Predicted line-up – last update on 9 February 2023

Mainz are well-rehearsed in the team and will probably play with a 3-4-2-1 again. Onisiwo will be looking to build on his performance against Bochum in attack and Ajorque will be looking to score his first goal for Mainz. Jonathan Burkhardt, Marlon Mustapha and Robin Zentner are still missing due to injury. It is still unclear whether Widmer will be fit again in time.

We expect coach Enrico Maaßen’s team to play in a 4-4-2 again, with Demirović likely to return to the starting eleven after his yellow suspension. Strobl, Cardona, Oxford, Iago and Hahn are still missing from the team through injury.
