Liverpool – Manchester United

Our Liverpool – Man United prediction: Liverpool win with a clean sheet – 2.25 odds

  • Liverpool have not conceded a goal against United at home in the PL since 2020
  • United have not scored in three PL games
  • Liverpool won the last league game 5-0

On Sunday afternoon, the Premier League leaders from Liverpool will face the fourteenth-placed team from Manchester at Anfield Road. The Reds are currently leading the table by six points, but can extend that to nine points with a win because they have one game less. United, on the other hand, should look down and score points soon to avoid getting caught up in the relegation battle.

Liverpool are in absolute top form at the moment. They have won their last three games in a row, always scoring at least three goals, and still only have one league defeat this season. Most recently, they beat West Ham 5-0 in their final game of the year. In their current form, they seem unbeatable.

United, on the other hand, are far from invincible at the moment and have lost their last three PL games without scoring a single goal. Overall, they have lost five of their last six league games and scored just four goals. It will take a miracle for United to get anything out of Liverpool. Liverpool Form & Record Check

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 13 Premier League games against Manchester United (seven wins, five draws). The defeat was a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford in August 2022. Liverpool are particularly strong at home: Manchester United have not won any of their last eight league away games against the Reds (four draws, four defeats).

The Reds celebrated a 4-2 victory over Newcastle in the first league game of 2024. It would be the first time since the 2013/14 season that Liverpool win their first league game of a calendar year in two consecutive years. In addition, they have won their last three Premier League games, scoring at least three goals in each game and a total of 14 goals. Their longest winning streak with at least three goals per game was in February and March 2014 (six games in a row).

Salah stands out above all the rest

Mohamed Salah stands out above all the rest: this season, he has been directly involved in 30 Premier League goals (17 goals, 13 assists). In eight games, he has scored a goal and provided at least one assist – already equaling the record for a single season. It is also the fifth time that Salah has reached at least 30 goal involvements in a season, making him joint top with Alan Shearer as the record holder in Premier League history. Against Manchester United, Salah has scored more goals (12) and provided more assists (six) than any other player in league history.

Liverpool facts & analysis
  • Eight PL home games unbeaten against United
  • Three or more goals scored in each of last three PL games
  • Salah top scorer against the Red Devils

Man United form & record check

Manchester United have only won one of their last eight league away games at Liverpool (four draws, four defeats). This is their longest winless streak at Anfield since 1970 to 1979 (nine games). Particularly striking: they scored only one goal in these eight games and have not scored in the last five games. The Red Devils have only gone longer without scoring in league history against Everton (six games from 1969 to 1974).

For the first time since 1989, Liverpool and Manchester United will meet again in the first league game of a calendar year. Back then, United won 3-1 at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day.

United in a slump

Manchester United are currently in crisis. They have lost their last three Premier League games. The last time they lost four league games in a row was between December and February 1979. The last time they lost four in a row without scoring a goal was way back in 1909.

After the 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the first leg, Liverpool’s Arne Slot could become only the second Reds coach to win both league games against Manchester United in his first season – after George Kay in the 1936/37 season.

Man United Facts & Analysis
  • Goalless in last five Anfield meetings
  • Three PL defeats in a row
  • Goalless in last three PL games

Liverpool will play in a 4-2-3-1 formation again under coach Arne Slot. After 14 league wins in 18 games, they are now aiming for their next three points against a weak United team.

The Red Devils will line up again in a 3-4-2-1 system under coach Ruben Amorim. After five defeats in their last six games, they urgently need to get back to winning ways to avoid being caught up in the relegation battle.

Liverpool – Man United head to head & statistics
