FC Liverpool – FC Burnley

The English Premier League soccer weekend is packed with exciting duels. Seven matches will take place on Saturday, including Liverpool FC’s game against Burnley FC. Find out in our Liverpool – Burnley betting tip whether Liverpool will defend their lead at the top of the table or whether Burnley will spring a surprise and continue to show signs of life.

Everything is at stake for the Reds, as the recent 3-1 defeat to fellow rivals Arsenal London last Sunday saw the gap between them and the league leaders shrink. Arsenal and Man City in particular are breathing down Liverpool’s neck. The Reds’ disadvantage is that the Citizens currently have one game less in their account and can therefore theoretically pick up three more points.

Burnley FC are at the bottom of the table and, together with Sheffield United, are almost out of contention for the top flight. They urgently need points, otherwise the non-relegation place will be out of reach

Liverpool Form & Balance Check

Liverpool have started the new year with four wins in all competitions and have not only taken the lead in the table, but are also still represented in both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. Their only defeat recently came against Arsenal FC. A defeat that hurt and cost important points in the title race.

The championship race is extremely tight and another slip-up by the Reds would very likely mean a slide down the table. It is therefore all the more important for coach Jürgen Klopp’s side to put the game in London behind them and put in a focused performance against Burnley to secure a three-pointer in the end.

Unlucky Van Dijk

One of the decisive factors in the Reds’ defeat to Arsenal was an unsuccessful move by defensive boss Virgil Van Dijk. After a harmless pass into the deep, where Van Dijk wanted to run off his opponent so that goalkeeper Alisson Becker could take over, the communication was not right and Arsenal player Martinelli was able to slot into the empty goal for a 2:1 lead.

The goal paved the way for victory for the Londoners in a game that went back and forth. Van Dijk took responsibility for the defeat in the post-match interview and it is to be hoped that such actions do not cost the Reds the title at the end of the season

Burnley Form & Balance Check

Burnley FC have now gone six games without a win. Their record from the previous four competitive games is two draws and two defeats. The recent 2-2 draw against FC Fulham leaves coach Vincent Kompany’s team on 13 points and in 19th place in the table.

The 17th place in the table is already seven points away. So things are not looking good for the team if they do not achieve a turnaround in the foreseeable future

Bundesliga loan brings hope

The draw last weekend is also thanks to new winter signing David Fofana. The 21-year-old striker scored twice against Fulham to secure a point for Burnley after trailing 2-0. The Ivorian, who has played two games for the Clarets, is on loan from Union Berlin.

There was too much competition in the forward line at the German capital and Fofana moved to the island to get more match practice. It remains to be seen whether he can still fire the team to relegation, but his debut has already been a good one

Burnley facts & analysis
  • 19th place in the table
  • Seven points behind a non-relegation place
  • Last game played to a 2-2 draw

Liverpool will be without defender Ibrahima Konaté, who was shown a yellow card against Arsenal. In his place, we expect to see young Jarell Quansah in central defense in coach Klopp’s 4-3-3 system. Offensively, little should change in the star ensemble. Nevertheless, Darwin Núñez and Thiago would also be options for the starting eleven.

In Burnley FC’s 4-4-2 system, we also don’t expect any major rotation compared to the 2-2 draw against Fulham. Only Sander Berge picked up his fifth yellow card and will not be available. Coach Kompany will either opt for an attacking option and start Fofana from the beginning, or go for a more defensive line-up with Johann Berg Gudmundsson or Arjanet Muric in the starting line-up
