RB Leipzig vs. Borussia Dortmund
Even though this match is not kicked off at top time, it is probably the most interesting clash on matchday six in the Bundesliga due to the big names and the circumstances. Leipzig welcomes Dortmund and this match is enormously explosive for several reasons. RB sacked Domenico Tedesco after the embarrassment in the top flight and introduced Marco Rose as the new coach just one day later. The 45-year-old was still coach of BVB last season and will meet his old employer directly in the first game.
In Dortmund, however, they will only focus on their own performance. The Black and Yellows have recovered from the shock against Bremen on matchday three and won both of their last two games 1-0, moving up to second place in the table. BVB have always looked relatively good in Leipzig in recent years, which is why the team is certainly looking forward to this encounter. Leipzig have made a blatant false start. They did not win any of their first three matches. On the fourth matchday, they felt redemption with a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg in their own stadium. But things were to get much worse. The performance in Frankfurt last weekend was one of the worst in Leipzig’s short Bundesliga history. But this was to be topped against Donetsk during the week. Leipzig’s counter-attacking was catastrophic and against an individually clearly inferior Ukrainian team they lost 1:4 in the end. Only one day later followed the dismissal of Domenico Tedesco.
Will Rose lead Leipzig out of the crisis?
It would be presumptuous to blame the sporting slump solely on Tedesco. Some of the transfers were also questionable, as were some of the decisions made by the club’s management. Now they decided to pull the ripcord in order to save the season. Just 48 hours after the dismissal, Leipzig already had a new coach in Marco Rose. The 45-year-old already knows the RB philosophy from his past coaching position at RB Salzburg. Last year he ventured to BVB, but the cooperation ended after just one season. Now he is supposed to lead RB out of the crisis and do so directly against BVB at the start of the season.

Dortmund form & balance check
Even though the defeat against Werder on matchday three shocked the club and the surrounding area, BVB did not collapse. Against Hertha and Hoffenheim, they recorded narrow but solid victories, and in their opening match in the top flight, they beat Copenhagen 3:0. The defence was particularly convincing in these games. Dortmund did not concede a goal in any of the three matches and did not allow much against Hoffenheim and Copenhagen in particular. Dortmund thus won four of the first five games and has passed the record champion for the time being. But the whole truth is that the team was not always convincing.
In the style of a top team?
No success in the Bundesliga so far has been convincing from start to finish. Three of the four victories came with a goal difference, in which luck was also partly on Borussia’s side. Overall, the forward play is clearly in need of improvement; Dortmund scored two or more goals in only two games. On the one hand, these close results are due to a lack of chances, but on the other hand also to a lack of individual class. With Haller, Adeyemi and Bynoe-Gittens, three important players are missing, and Modeste is not yet the reinforcement they had hoped for. But as long as BVB comes off the pitch as winners, the “how” will not matter to those responsible.

After the matches during the week, there will be rotation for both teams. Since Leipzig signed a new coach before this match, the line-up is very speculative. Schlager is a candidate for the starting eleven, but also Werner, because Rose usually preferred a lot of speed. Nkunku, on the other hand, should be set. At BVB, Hazard is out after his injury against Copenhagen, Reyna will deputise for him. Due to load management, Hummels and Wolf, Süle and Meunier could replace him. Kobel is still unfit in goal.
