RB Leipzig vs. FC Augsburg
On the penultimate matchday of the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig have their last home game of the current season coming up. Their opponents at the Red Bull Arena on Sunday evening from 19:30 will be FC Augsburg, who have been more or less certain since the coming weekend that they will also be allowed to compete in the Bundesliga next season.
The Fuggerstädter lost to 1. FC Köln by a clear 1:4, but are nevertheless as good as saved by the results of the competition. VfB Stuttgart did not manage more than a draw against Wolfsburg, so that the Swabians can now only overtake FCA if they win against Bayern and Cologne, while Augsburg lose against Leipzig as well as at SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
For the hosts, on the other hand, there is still a lot at stake. From third to seventh place, anything is still possible at this point. Whether we think it will go up or down for the Saxons, you can find out now in our Leipzig vs Augsburg tip.

Leipzig Form & Balance Check
RB Leipzig have played their very good second half of the season and have been able to push their way up into the top 3 of the league. However, after the defeat in Mönchengladbach on the last matchday, the qualification for the Champions League threatens to fail shortly before the end of the season. The Saxons no longer have complete control over reaching the top four, as the last matchday will see a direct duel between Freiburg and Leverkusen, who are currently one and four points ahead of Leipzig respectively. All RB can do is win the supposedly easy games against Augsburg and Bielefeld while hoping for slip-ups from Freiburg and/or Leverkusen.
Bitter Europa League exit in Glasgow
The possibility of qualifying for the top flight by winning the Europa League has been gone since last Thursday. The German representatives were beaten 3-1 by Glasgow Rangers after winning the first leg 1-0 at the Red Bull Arena. The disappointment is great, but that is precisely why it is now all the more important to end the season on a positive note by qualifying for the Champions League and winning the DFB Cup. Statistically, things look pretty good against Augsburg. Four of five Bundesliga home games against FCA have been won, with the remaining game ending goalless.
Leipzig facts & analysis
– 54 points from 32 games
– Last lost 1:3 at Gladbach
– Won 4 of last 5 home games against Augsburg
– Lost 3 of last 4 competitive matches
Augsburg form & balance check
While FC Augsburg are not yet fully secured, they can breathe a slight sigh of relief despite their recent 4-1 defeat to Cologne. VfB Stuttgart’s draw against Wolfsburg makes it very unlikely that the Swabians will overtake FCA in the final sprint and thus push them into the relegation spot. Augsburg would have to lose their last two games, while Stuttgart would have to take the full six points from their games against Bayern and Cologne. Hertha BSC would also need to pick up at least one more win for FCA to drop to 16th place.
Soon the 11th league win in a row
So it looks strongly as if the Fuggerstädter could keep themselves in the Bundesliga for another year. After their promotion in the 2010/11 season, who would have thought that the small club from Bavaria would become a long-standing and deserving member of the Bundesliga, still active in this division eleven years later. FCA’s games may not always be characterised by footballing brilliance, but the team is only extremely rarely lacking in running and commitment. This is how the Fuggerstädter have kept the class for eleven years and with this approach they will try again in the coming season.
Augsburg facts & analysis
– 35 points from 32 games
– Last lost 1:4 against Cologne
– Expected to finish between 12th and 15th for the 7th time in a row
– 3 defeats from last 4 matches
Predicted line-up – last update on 6 May 2022
RB Leipzig will not spare any players on the remaining two match days, but will send the best possible eleven into the race. The hosts will have to do without the suspended Simakan and the injured Haidara. Adams, Henrichs, Olmo and Szoboszlai are other alternatives to our listed starting eleven.
In contrast, there should be no surprises at FC Augsburg. The starting eleven is largely set in stone here. Pedersen could come in for the injured Iago. Gruezo could play for Maier and Niederlechner could start instead of the injured Hahn. In addition, a back four with Uduokhai as another defensive player would also be possible.
Before 2010, we were still playing against Pößneck in the Oberliga in May. 12 years later, we experience European Cup thrillers like yesterday at @RangersFC
