Juventus Turin vs. Inter Milan
The 2021/22 football season is slowly but surely in the home stretch. The Bundesliga and many other top leagues enter their final matchday next weekend, meaning that the finals in the national and international cup competitions will soon be the only thing football fans have to look forward to before the summer break.
In Italy, however, they are taking a slightly different approach, as the final of the ‘Coppa Italia’ will take place next Wednesday – before the last matchday. Defending champions Juventus Turin and reigning champions Inter Milan will face each other. Kick-off is at 21:00 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The Nerazzuris from Milan are the slight favourites. They will finish ahead of the Old Lady of Turin in the league for the second year in a row this year and have already had a slight edge in recent encounters. Since the beginning of 2021, the upcoming final will be the eighth direct duel between the two clubs. In addition to two draws, both teams have won three encounters in this period. Inter won their most recent league match 1-0 away from home just under a month ago, but our Juventus vs Inter prediction will tell you whether we think Milan will have the advantage on Wednesday and what other predictions we would make about this final.

Juventus Form & Balance Check
After another mixed year, Juventus still have the chance to end the 2021/22 season on a high next Wednesday by winning the Coppa Italia. The second half of the season saw the Old Lady get into better and better shape, but Massimiliano Allegri’s team had to accept early on that they will probably not be in the title race again this season due to their poor start to the season. After five defeats from their opening 14 games, they have only lost two more to date.
King class is secured
One of those came just last matchday at relegation-threatened CFC Genoa (1:2). In Serie A, however, there is nothing left to play for for Juve anyway. Fourth place and the associated qualification for the Champions League is already assured, ideally Vlahovic & Co. could at most have jumped past SSC Napoli to third place.
In the Coppa Italia, on the other hand, slip-ups were avoided. A commanding 4-1 win over Sampdoria Genoa was followed by a narrow 2-1 win over Sassuolo before Juventus beat Fiorentina 3-0 in a first and second leg. If the Old Lady now wins against Inter, they could be crowned Italian Cup winners for the second time in a row and for the 15th time in total.
Juventus facts & analysis
– Cup: 4:1 vs. Sampdoria -☻ 2:1 vs. Sassuolo -☻ 3:0 after first leg and second leg vs. Florence
– Most recently lost 1:2 at CFC Genoa
– None of last 3 duels with Inter won
Inter Form & Balance Check
While Serie A is already over for Juventus, it’s still all to play for for Inter Milan in the final sprint. The Nerazzuri were one point ahead of city rivals Milan in pole position for the championship title for a long time, but lost their comfortable starting position with a 2-1 defeat at Bologna at the end of April. Since Milan have won all of their last four games, Inter have no choice but to hope for a slip-up by the league leaders on the last two matchdays. However, the remaining programme should give hope in this respect. While Inter face two teams from the bottom third of the table in Cagliari and Sampdoria Genoa, Milan still have two fairly unpleasant opponents in Sassuolo and Atalanta Bergamo to face.
Final instead of first-round exit
The Milanese deserved their place in the final of the Coppa Italia this year, although their journey almost ended as early as possible. In round one, Milan were trailing 2-1 against FC Empoli until shortly before the end, before goals from Ranocchia (90th) and Sensi (104th) turned the game in favour of the reigning champions. They followed that up with a commanding 2-0 win over AS Roma and a 3-0 first and second leg win over AC Milan.
After a brace from Lautaro Martinez (4th, 40th), Robin Gosens finally put the lid on the second leg with a 3-0 in the 82nd minute (three minutes after his substitution). Nevertheless, he will be back on the bench in the final, after all he has not played a single match from the start since his comeback at the beginning of March. Ivan Perisic is simply unavoidable at the moment.
Inter facts & Analysis
– Cup: 2:1 vs. Empoli -☻ 2:0 vs. AS Rome -☻ 3:0 after first and second leg against Milan
– Last 4:2 win against Empoli
– 7 Coppa Italia titles – last in 2011
Predicted line-up – last updated 9 May 2022
The hosts have always alternated between a 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 in recent weeks. Against Inter we expect the 4-3-3 system again. In terms of personnel, many possibilities are conceivable. We expect Cuadrado, Vlahovic and Morata in the offensive. Chiesa, Jorge, McKennie, Locatelli and Pellegrini are missing due to injury.
Inter will play in a 3-5-2 and only have to do without central defender Bastoni. Due to the wide squad, some established players like Vidal, Correa, Gosens or Sanchez will have to sit on the bench again for the time being.
