Hertha BSC vs. FSV Mainz
The 33rd and penultimate matchday of the Bundesliga is just around the corner and for the Old Lady from Berlin it is all about a home win against FSV Mainz 05 this weekend. The match at the Berlin Olympiastadion will kick off early on Saturday evening at 18:30.
The hosts therefore still have a lot at stake, while the season has long been over for the visitors from Mainz. However, their recent 3:1 victory over FC Bayern showed that they do not approach the final spurt of the season listlessly. In Berlin, after eleven failed attempts, they are finally looking for another away win. The first leg should make the visitors feel positive in this respect. Bo Svensson celebrated his highest victory as coach of the 05ers in the 4-0 home win against Hertha in the first half of the season.
Under Felix Magath, however, the home side has shown a completely different performance in recent weeks. Moreover, the 68-year-old has only lost one of eleven matches with Mainz in his career so far. Find out whether he can score again against the Rheinhessen side on Saturday and what we think about this game in our Hertha vs Mainz betting tips.

Hertha Form & Balance Check
Until the 89th minute, all was well with the world at Hertha BSC last weekend. The Berliners were leading 0:1 at Arminia Bielefeld, while VfB Stuttgart were trailing 0:1 against VfL Wolfsburg. At this point, staying in the Bundesliga was secure. But since both Bielefeld and Stuttgart equalised shortly before the final whistle, the starting situation now looks different again. Although the Old Lady still has a four-point lead over the relegation places with two games remaining, they would have preferred to be safe before the final spurt of the season.
Magath increases the run rate enormously
A look at the current form shows that staying in the class should actually only be a formality. Hertha recently remained unbeaten for three games in a row for the first time in the second half of the season and won twice in that period (0:1 in Augsburg and 2:0 against Stuttgart). At Arminia, the third win in a row was only narrowly missed. Above all, the disastrous defence showed a completely different face again under Felix Magath. Until Bielefeld’s equaliser, Hertha BSC went 275 minutes without conceding a goal, something that would have been unthinkable under Magath’s predecessor Korkut.
This is probably also due to the fact that Davie Selke & Co. have run significantly more than the players of the opposing team in recent games. Thus, it is extremely difficult for the opponent to advance into dangerous spaces in the opponent’s half. Only the statistics against Mainz could dampen the home side’s optimism a little ahead of Saturday. With six defeats, Hertha have only won one of the last ten encounters with the Rheinhessen side. In the Olympiastadion, there was a goalless draw and a 1:3 defeat most recently.
Hertha facts & analysis
– 33 points from 32 games
– Last played 1:1 in Bielefeld
– Won only 1 of last 11 duels with Mainz
– Remained 275 minutes without conceding a goal until equalising at Bielefeld
Mainz Form & Balance Check
For FSV Mainz 05, the season has long been over. After the strong first half of the season more or less ensured that the team would stay in the league – and thus achieved their goal for the season – the second half of the season often lacked the final motivation to put in the best possible performance on the pitch. Before the 3:1 against Bayern, Mainz had won only one of eight games – at home with 4:0 against the extremely poor Arminia from Bielefeld. The five winless games before the triumph against Bayern were also the longest negative streak since club legend Bo Svensson has been on the touchline.
Great at home, bad away
With hardly any other team has the gap between home and away performances been as great as with FSV Mainz 05 this season. In the home table, the 05ers are in third place behind Bayern and Dortmund and even ahead of RB Leipzig with an impressive 34 points from 16 home games. In contrast, only bottom-placed Greuther Fürth (4) have scored fewer points away from home than FSV (8).
With a view to next Saturday, however, the visitors can certainly hope for something worthwhile. Mainz have not lost in their past five league games against the Alte Dame, with two trebles, and are thus unbeaten against Hertha for longer than against any other current team in the Bundesliga.
Mainz facts & analysis
– 42 points from 32 games
– Last win 3:1 against Bayern
– Home table rank 3 – Away table rank 17
– Unbeaten for 5 duels with Hertha – against no current BL team longer
Predicted line-up – last update on 5 May 2022
With Jovetic, Lee (Dong-jun), Schwolow and Nsona, Hertha still have a few players out due to injury. But Felix Magath shouldn’t be too bothered, because none of them would have made it into the starting eleven in the final spurt of the season anyway. Once again, we can expect a 4-2-3-1 with Boateng and Selke as the hopefuls in the offensive. Marco Richter could also start at right wing for Darida.
The guests will also have to do without Lee (Jae-sung) and Burgzorg in Berlin. The starting eleven could remain unchanged compared to the 3:1 victory over FC Bayern. However, with nothing at stake for FSV, personnel changes are entirely possible.
