Hertha BSC vs. Bayer Leverkusen
After four failed attempts, Hertha BSC finally claimed their first Bundesliga win of the new season last weekend in Augsburg. In the upcoming home match against Bayer Leverkusen, the Berliners are desperate to follow up and ideally keep the next three points at home right away. Our Hertha vs Leverkusen betting tips will tell you whether we think the Old Lady can win again against a very battered opponent and what else we think about this matchday 6 encounter.
Leverkusen were beaten by new league leaders SC Freiburg last weekend after their first win of the season in Mainz (3-0), making it the Werkself’s worst Bundesliga start since the 1982/83 season. Back then, Bayer even finished the first half of the season at the bottom of the table, but still managed to stay in the league thanks to a strong second half. This time, the team wants to turn the tables much earlier, preferably starting with an away win in the capital, of course.

Hertha Form & Balance Check
The Old Lady’s form curve has been pointing upwards for weeks, only the results have been lacking until recently. On the last matchday in Augsburg, however, the Berliners were finally rewarded for their efforts after several good performances and clinched their first three points of the new season. Dodi Lukebakio scored with a header in the 57th minute after a fine assist from Marvin Plattenhardt to make it 1-0, and Marco Richter put the lid on it with a 2-0 goal in stoppage time.
It was a very special day for Berlin’s second goalscorer. In the second game after his shocking testicular cancer diagnosis, Richter provided the final decision around 20 minutes after his substitution – and that too against his old employer. What a beautiful story.
Don’t fall behind
After decent performances against Frankfurt (1:1), Gladbach (0:1) and Dortmund (0:1), the result in Augsburg was finally right and the fact that the Berliners finally didn’t fall behind was decisive. In 2022, Hertha conceded 0:1 in 14 Bundesliga games and did not take even one point from any of these 14 games! What’s more, the Berliners have only won this calendar year when they have gone without conceding a goal (3-0 vs Hoffenheim, 1-0 in Augsburg, 2-0 vs Stuttgart, 2-0 in Hamburg and 2-0 in Augsburg).

Leverkusen form & balance check
After their commanding 3-0 away win at FSV Mainz 05, many probably thought Bayer Leverkusen had finally arrived in the 2022/23 season after previously losing three in a row. In the recent home match against Freiburg, the performance was not bad at all, but in the end the Werkself was once again without points.
The Sport-Club turned the hosts’ 1-0 half-time lead into a 2-1 lead within three minutes shortly after the change of ends. After Patrik Schick’s equaliser, Bayer was on the verge of turning the game around completely again, but conceded another goal in the 72nd minute after a corner and were beaten 3-2 in the end. Since the Champions League opener in Bruges (0:1) was also narrowly lost last Wednesday, the crisis in Leverkusen continues.
Better away than at home
At home, the Werkself is still waiting for its first point after defeats against Augsburg (1:2), Hoffenheim (0:3) and Freiburg (2:3). Away from home, on the other hand, things have been much better throughout the calendar year. On Matchday 1, Leverkusen lost narrowly 0:1 in Dortmund, while the second away match in Mainz was won 3:0. Overall, the Werkself has a proud six wins, two draws and only two defeats away from home in the Bundesliga year 2022.
Leverkusen facts & analysis
– 3 points after 5 games
– Last lost 2:3 against Bremen
– Worst start to a season since 1982/83
Predicted line-up – last update on 8 September 2022
The Berliners will most likely start with the same eleven that was allowed to start against Augsburg. In the attack, only Stevan Jovetic is an alternative to Wilfried Kanga. In midfield, we again expect Lucas Tousart, Suat Serdar and Ivan Sunjic, as newcomer Jean-Paul Boëtius has not really been convincing so far. Linus Gechter, Kelian Nsona, Dong-jun Lee and Derry Scherhant are out injured.
After the defeat against Freiburg, the Werkself could once again make changes. In addition, the strain of the English week can also have an influence on the line-up. We expect Leverkusen with a three-man backline, in which there could be no place for Odilon Kossounou. Newcomer Callum Hudson-Odoi is expected to start for the first time. Karim Bellarabi, Andrey Lunev, Amine Adli and Florian Wirtz are currently absent through injury.
