1. FC Heidenheim – Borussia Mönchengladbach

Our Heidenheim v Gladbach tip is: Gladbach to win – 2.35 odds

  • Gladbach has only lost one of the last five league games
  • Heidenheim has lost five of their last seven BL games
  • In the first half of the season, Gladbach won 3:2

The relegation battle in the Voith Stadium: When 1. FC Heidenheim host Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, two teams with completely different form curves will face each other. The home side, who are in 16th place in the table, were at least able to get an important point in the relegation battle last weekend with a surprising 2-2 draw in Leipzig – after previously suffering five defeats in a row. Interestingly, Frank Schmidt’s team was remarkably efficient in front of goal, especially in the first half.

The Foals, on the other hand, had a pitch-black day in the 3-0 defeat to Augsburg. The early red card for keeper Jonas Omlin unsettled Gerardo Seoane’s team. The coach now has to improvise with Tobias Sippel in goal. With 34 points, Gladbach are in 9th place, level on points with VfL Wolfsburg – but after the heavy home defeat, the trend is anything but positive. It will be interesting to see how Borussia reacts to the setback. You can find out what kind of game we can look forward to in our Heidenheim – Gladbach tip.

Heidenheim Form & Record Check

1. FC Heidenheim are currently experiencing an alarming decline in form in the Bundesliga. After five defeats in a row, Frank Schmidt’s team managed to get an important point last weekend with a 2-2 draw in Leipzig. Particularly noteworthy was the brilliant start with a 2-0 lead after just 13 minutes thanks to goals from Honsak and Pieringer – a clear sign of life in the relegation battle.

However, the defensive problems continue to be evident. In the last five games, Heidenheim has always conceded at least one goal in the first half. The bitter defeat in the Conference League against Copenhagen (1-3 a.e.t.) also highlights the current period of weakness. A tactical substitution error by Schmidt contributed to the defeat – something that never happens to the experienced coach.

Dangerous zone

With 15 points, Heidenheim is in the relegation zone, level on points with VfL Bochum. The gap to safety is already six points. Interestingly, the team repeatedly shows its potential, as in the strong performance in Leipzig. However, to avoid relegation, more consistency is urgently needed – especially in defense.

Heidenheim facts & analysis
  • 16th place in the table
  • Not won in seven games
  • Last game 2:2 against Leipzig

Heidenheim are likely to stick with the tried and tested 3-4-2-1 system in the next game. After the hard-fought 2-2 draw in Leipzig and despite being knocked out of the Conference League, there is little reason for Schmidt to make any major changes to his starting lineup.

The back three of Mainka, Siersleben and Gimber are likely to form the defense. In attacking midfield, Honsak and Conteh could operate behind Pieringer, a combination that has proven quite effective in Leipzig recently.

The role of winter signing Wanner, who is likely to organize central midfield together with Scienza, will be interesting to watch. However, as usual, the final lineup will not be known until shortly before the game begins.

Gladbach Form & Record Check

The recent development at Borussia Mönchengladbach resembles a rollercoaster ride. After an impressive streak of three wins and a draw, they suffered a bitter setback in the last matchday: a 3-0 defeat to Augsburg, in which the foals were completely out of sorts after an early red card for keeper Jonas Omlin. Particularly bitter: long-time substitute Tobias Sippel will now have to play, as no other goalkeepers are available.

The tactical realignment under coach Seoane is interesting. He has recently been relying more on Kevin Stöger instead of Alassane Plea – a decision that paid off before the Augsburg game. The foals showed more variety in their build-up play and were able to work their way up to 9th place in the table, level on points with VfL Wolfsburg.

Convincing offense

However, defensive stability remains an ongoing issue, especially since two pillars of the defense, Ko Itakura and Nico Elvedi, are facing a possible summer transfer. Nevertheless, the offense has been on target in the last five games – at least one goal has been scored in 80% of the matches. The defeat against Augsburg was the first real setback after an otherwise convincing run.

Gladbach facts & analysis
  • Ninth place
  • Only one defeat in the last five games
  • Last game 0:3 against Augsburg

After the red card for Omlin in the last game, veteran Tobias Sippel will be between the posts.

Coach Seoane is likely to stick with the proven 4-2-3-1 system, with Itakura and Elvedi likely to form the central defense again. In the offensive midfield, Stöger seems to have secured the starting spot – Plea will probably have to continue to settle for the joker role.

It will be interesting to see whether Seoane makes further personnel changes after the clear defeat against Augsburg. However, the final lineup will only be known shortly before the start of the game, as usual.

Heidenheim – Gladbach head-to-head & statistics

The last Bundesliga game between Heidenheim and Gladbach in October 2024 ended with a 3-2 victory for the Foals. A typical pattern, because Borussia have clearly come out on top in the last five duels – three wins and two draws.

A glance at the goal distribution is interesting: in four of the five matches, a maximum of one goal was scored in the second half. By contrast, the first 45 minutes were usually goal-laden – Gladbach scored before half-time in 80% of the matches.

The first leg of this season’s tie was the absolute exception, with only five goals. The second leg in March 2024 ended 1-1, and before that there were two Gladbach wins within a few days: 3-1 in the cup and 2-1 in the league in October 2023.

You might think that Heidenheim would suit the Foals – but the Swabians are still waiting for their first victory against Gladbach. However, four of the five duels were closely fought. Even the first meeting in 2011 in the DFB Cup had to be decided on penalties.
