On Sunday evening, 1. FC Heidenheim will host FSV Mainz 05 in the Voith Arena – a crucial Bundesliga duel in the fight for important points. Heidenheim also have the added burden of the Conference League, which complicates their situation. But there was a 2-1 win against Copenhagen during the week. Heidenheim Form & record check

1. FC Heidenheim are currently going through an extremely critical phase in the Bundesliga. With just one point from their last five games and four defeats in a row, Frank Schmidt’s team has slipped to 16th place in the table. Particularly alarming: the team conceded goals in all five games, usually even in the first half. The most recent 0-1 defeat to SC Freiburg once again highlighted the current weaknesses – the team lacks the necessary stability, especially in defense.

Interestingly, the team now faces a special challenge: while the relegation battle in the Bundesliga is in full swing, they won against FC Copenhagen in the Conference League against a top-class opponent. This double burden could prove to be a double-edged sword. Captain Patrick Mainka and goalkeeper Kevin Müller emphasize the will to give their all in both competitions, but the focus must inevitably be on avoiding relegation from the Bundesliga.

Heidenheim must score

With only a one-point lead over Holstein Kiel, the air at the bottom of the table is getting thinner and thinner. The offensive power that characterized Heidenheim at the beginning of the season is currently barely visible. In the last five games, they have scored only five goals – not enough to fight for survival. One might wonder whether the additional burden of the Conference League at this stage could even be counterproductive for the big goal of avoiding relegation.

Heidenheim facts & analysis
  • Four league defeats in a row
  • Last game against Copenhagen won
  • Only three goals in the last four games

Coach Frank Schmidt is expected to stick with the proven 4-2-3-1 system. The defense should form with the well-rehearsed back four around captain Mainka and Gimber in the center, flanked by Traoré and Föhrenbach on the outside. In defensive midfield, Kerber and Schöppner will control the center. In the offensive area, Beck is expected on the ten, flanked by Krätzig and Honsak. Zivzivadze could start in the center forward position. Currently, there are no significant injury concerns.

Mainz Form & Balance Check

The current form of Mainz 05 shows a mixed picture. In the last five Bundesliga games, the Rhine Hessians only scored four points, which is too little given their ambitions. In particular, the recent 0-0 draw against Augsburg illustrates the offensive harmlessness that has been a feature of the entire second half of the season. Interestingly, hardly any goals were scored in the second half of the last five games – a pattern that gives cause for concern.

Nevertheless, there are also positive aspects: Mainz are in 7th place with 32 points and are only one point behind SC Freiburg. Their home record is remarkable – they have not been beaten in their own stadium in seven games. The 2-0 win over Stuttgart a few weeks ago also showed that the team is capable of competing against top teams.

Burkardt is back

The integration of new signing Arnaud Nordin could breathe new life into an offense that has faltered somewhat of late. The return of Jonathan Burkardt also promises more firepower in attack. However, one may wonder whether these personnel options will be enough to stop the current negative trend of just one win in the last five games.

Mainz facts & analysis
  • Only four points in the last five games
  • Unbeaten in seven home games
  • Four defeats in last five away games

Mainz 05 are likely to field the 3-4-2-1 system again under new coach Bo Henriksen, which proved to be a stable formation in the recent 0-0 draw against Augsburg. Zentner will be in goal as usual. The back three will likely be formed by da Costa, Jenz and Kohr, with the latter moving back from defensive midfield. Caci and Mwene are set on the flanks.

Amiri is expected to control the game in the center after his return, with Sano likely to take over the defensive cover next to him. Lee Jae-Sung and Nebel are expected in attack behind the lone striker Weiper. It will be interesting to see whether new signing Nordin could already be an option for the starting eleven – but at the moment, there is more to be said for a place on the bench.

Heidenheim – Mainz Head to Head & Statistics

The head-to-head between Heidenheim and Mainz 05 speaks for itself: the promoted team has not yet suffered a defeat in the three Bundesliga meetings so far. Schmidt’s team have two wins and a draw to their name.

In the most recent meeting in September 2024, Heidenheim won 2-0 away from home. Before that, there was a 1-1 draw in the Voith Arena in May 2024. FCH won the first duel in December 2023 1-0.

Heidenheim’s defensive stability in these games is interesting: they have not conceded more than one goal in any of the three games. Mainz, on the other hand, are still waiting for their first win against the Bundesliga newcomers and have not even scored in the last two meetings.

It is also striking that there have been few goals in the direct duels – all three games ended with fewer than 2.5 goals. The first half was always particularly cautious, with no more than 1.5 goals scored before the break.
