One of these matches will take place on Sunday afternoon. There, 1. FC Heidenheim will host FC Augsburg. The hosts secured their place in the Conference League during the week and are also doing very well in the league. Augsburg were held to a draw at home to Bremen last weekend and will naturally be looking to make it a three-point haul. Heidenheim Form & Balance Check
Heidenheim were one of the surprise teams last season. As a newly promoted team, they played a brave brand of soccer and made it straight into the Conference League qualifiers. They also seem to feel very comfortable in the current season. They won their cup match confidently with 4:0 and also cut a good figure in the Bundesliga opener.
Away against St. Pauli, they had less of a share of the game and in some situations really had to fear for a draw, but thanks to their counter-attacking strength they managed to win 2:0 in the end. With these three points and a superior goal difference, they are currently in third place in the table
English Week
With success comes pressure and naturally the intensity increases. Apart from a few rare cup weeks, Heidenheim have never had the benefit of an English week in recent years. And now they’ve had two of them to start the season. They played against BK Häcken in the Conference League qualifiers during the week and won both games in commanding fashion (2:1, 3:2).
Of course, the question now is whether Frank Schmidt’s young team can cope with this workload, also with a view to the rest of the season, or whether they will not manage to regenerate in time. Because every single player has to be back at 100% by the weekend
Heidenheim facts & analysis
- Have won all their games so far this season
- Third place in the table
- Won last game 2:0
Augsburg Form & Balance Check
Augsburg’s start to this new season appears to be quite mixed. In their first competitive game of the season, they had to play away against regional league side Viktoria Berlin and had huge problems in the early stages. They were 1-0 down by the 30th minute, but then managed to fully exploit the difference in class and went on to win 4:1.
It was a different story in the opening game of their Bundesliga season, when they had to play at home against equal opponents Werder Bremen. In a very close and exciting duel, the two teams gave each other absolutely nothing and the final score was a 2:2 draw. The Fuggerstädter are currently in eighth place with their point
Away horror
Looking back at last season, it is clear that Augsburg are not an away team. On the contrary, their performance seems to stagnate in foreign stadiums. Last season, they won just four of their 17 away games, drew three and lost ten times. Bottom of the table and relegated Darmstadt had just as many away defeats. With 15 points from 17 games, FC Augsburg ended up in eleventh place in the away table
Augsburg facts & analysis
- Eighth place in the table
- Last game 2:2
- Last away game in Heidenheim won 5:2
Heidenheim will probably start in a 4-2-3-1, like last weekend against St. Pauli. They had their Conference League qualifier during the week, so some players will probably get their break. Basically, the line-up will be the same as in the last league game. Conteh is an option for Beck on the wing, otherwise Frank Schmidt will change very little.
Augsburg will also remain true to their system. They will start the game in a 4-4-2, with the center formed in a diamond. Jess Thorup is also unlikely to make any major changes to his personnel this early in the season
Heidenheim – Augsburg head-to-head comparison & stats
This clash has only taken place twice in the past. Heidenheim and Augsburg clashed for the first time last season. Augsburg won the first leg in Heidenheim by a furious 5:2, but “only” won the second leg 1:0. So far, Heidenheim do not seem to have found a remedy against their upcoming guests
