Borussia Mönchengladbach – VfL Wolfsburg
This weekend, the Bundesliga already enters its 27th matchday. On Easter Sunday, the duel of two table neighbours is on the agenda. The match kicks off at 15:30 at Borussia-Park in Mönchengladbach. Borussia will then welcome VfL Wolfsburg.
However, although the two teams are separated by only one place in the league, it feels like there is a world of difference between Borussia and the Wolves at the moment. VfL Wolfsburg are only two points behind Eintracht Frankfurt in sixth place and are still in the fight for the Europa League. Gladbach, on the other hand, are already seven points behind the Wolves and will finish the season in mid-table.
Last weekend, however, was disappointing for both clubs. Although VfL Wolfsburg overcame a 0:2 deficit at home, they will still not be satisfied with the 2:2 draw against FC Augsburg. Gladbach, on the other hand, disappointed completely in the Rhineland derby and were even well served with the 0:0. Find out which team can bounce back this week in our Gladbach vs Wolfsburg tip.

Gladbach Form & Balance Check
The season started promisingly for Borussia Mönchengladbach, with only one defeat in the first seven games and the appearance that the team was marching towards Europe under coach Daniel Farke. However, the Foals’ performances dropped off as the season progressed. The team is currently in tenth place and is already nine points behind sixth place.
The second half of the season has not gone as well as hoped. The team from the Lower Rhine has now gone five games without a win in the Bundesliga. In their last match, they only managed a 0-0 draw against 1. FC Köln. Borussia’s only home win in 2023 was still the 3:2 against Bayern.
Home strength as hope
The current crisis at Mönchengladbach, however, cannot be attributed solely to the offensive. Under the guidance of coach Daniel Farke, Borussia’s attacking play has improved significantly. Compared to the previous season, Gladbach has scored four goals more and with a total of 40 goals, the team from the Rhineland is among the top half of the league.
The main problem for the Foals this season, however, is their lack of consistency. So far, Gladbach has not managed to win two games in a row in the Bundesliga. The discrepancy between home and away games is particularly striking. While the Foals have already recorded seven wins at home, they have only managed a single treble away from home.
Gladbach facts & analysis
– Tenth place in the Bundesliga
– Without a win for five matches
– Only two wins in 2023
Wolfsburg form & balance check
The Wolves had a weak start to the season but steadily improved under the direction of coach Niko Kovač, even going on an impressive run of ten games without defeat. However, this streak came to an end at the end of January with a bitter 2-1 defeat against Werder Bremen. Since then, VfL has struggled again in the following matches.
In the past nine games, VfL only picked up two wins. Last Saturday, the Wolves only played 2-2 at home against FC Augsburg. However, the Lower Saxons showed morale and came back from a 0:2 deficit. New international Felix Nmecha scored the equaliser in stoppage time to close the two-point gap to sixth place.
Arnold’s pitch-black day
Maximilian Arnold is the player in VfL Wolfsburg’s midfield who often makes the difference. As captain of the team, he is one of the youngest team captains in the entire league at just 28 years of age. He has been part of the Wolves’ professional team for more than eleven years and even played for the club in his youth.
Arnold also took centre stage recently against FC Augsburg. However, not in the way he probably would have preferred. Already in the second minute, the midfielder headed an Augsburg corner into his own goal. 19 minutes later, he then missed a penalty on the other side. Arnold hopes for a less used day against Gladbach.
Wolfsburg facts & analysis
– Only two wins in last nine competitive matches.
– Currently in ninth place in the Bundesliga
– No defeat in five games
Predicted line-up – last update on 8 April 2023
Daniel Farke will probably send his team into the game in a 4-2-3-1 again. Alassane Pléa will probably move into the starting eleven on the left in order to provide more goal threat. Midfield ace Julian Weigl is still missing for the Foals due to injury.
The visitors from Wolfsburg, on the other hand, will again start in a 4-3-3. The Wolves will create danger up front with their quick players. Felix Nmecha and Luca Waldschmidt are pushing for the starting eleven after their goals against Augsburg.
