Gladbach Form & Balance Check

Gladbach got off to a very mixed start to the season last weekend, but then put in a commanding performance towards the end of their game. Borussia found it extremely difficult at the start against third-division side Aue and trailed from the 8th minute onwards. They acted far too passively and were extremely error-prone. After the first drink break, however, the game changed abruptly and Gladbach looked more alert and playful.

They rewarded themselves with a deserved equalizer in the 35th minute and then had a huge chance to take the lead shortly before the break with a penalty, which Weigl missed. After the break, however, Gladbach continued to have everything under control and were able to decide the game with two more goals. The first 25 minutes left plenty of room for doubt, but after that Gladbach put in a very solid performance

Leverkusen as a fearful opponent

The upcoming opponent also provides plenty of room for doubt. Those responsible at Gladbach will probably not like to look back at the past. Gladbach have only won once in their last ten games, with two draws and seven defeats between them.

Last season, they suffered a 3-0 defeat at home when Leverkusen literally overran them. They have not been victorious against Leverkusen since 2019 and there is little to suggest that this streak will be broken in the upcoming match.

Gladbach facts & analysis
  • Won the last time against Leverkusen in 2019
  • Last season in 14th place in the table
  • Last game won 3:1

Leverkusen Form & Balance Check

Leverkusen’s season got off to a furious start last Saturday. They had to face Stuttgart in the Supercup final. The game got off to the usual lively start, with both sides creating the first chances, which Leverkusen made the most of and took the lead in the 11th minute. The answer was not long in coming and VfB equalized four minutes later. The Werkself’s backline simply looked too slow when they conceded this goal. They weakened themselves with a red card before the break, but what followed was a second half full of passion.

Stuttgart increased the lead to 2:1 in the 63rd minute and Leverkusen seemed to be shaken awake and gave everything in the final phase. This was also characterized by a great deal of horseplay and fouls, with a total of nine yellow cards in the second 45 minutes. The Werkself then did what they do best and Schick scored in the 88th minute to make it 2:2 after numerous previous chances. It then went straight to a penalty shoot-out, in which Bayer had the better nerves and were able to win the game in the end

Away strength

Of course, we must always remember what an incredibly strong season Leverkusen played last year. If they can build on that in any shape or form, they could be in contention for the championship again this time. No other team has even come close to matching their away strength.

In 17 away games, they won 14, drew three and did not lose a single match. These results naturally put them in first place in the away table and even put them 14 points clear of their closest rivals. For orientation: If only Bayer’s away games had counted last season, they would still have finished eighth with their 45 points and thus qualified for Europe

Leverkusen facts & analysis
  • Last game won on penalties
  • Reigning champions and cup winners
  • Not lost away from home since May 2023

Gladbach will probably start in the same system as in the cup match against Erzgebirge Aue. In their usual 4-2-3-1, they want to consolidate the center and at the same time create a lot of pace on the wings. Coach Gerardo Seoane will also need to make only a few changes to his personnel. Lainer could be an option for right-back Scally, and Koné could also start in place of Weigl.

Leverkusen are likely to make a few changes from the Super Cup final. Tah will definitely move into the starting eleven, while Andrich could move into the center alongside Xhaka. On the flanks, Grimaldo and Frimpong will take over for Belocian and Tella, with Wirtz starting as usual in attacking midfield. They will probably stick with the 3-4-2-1 system

Gladbach – Leverkusen head-to-head & stats

The Rhineland derby has already been played 92 times in the past. The two have met 84 times in the Bundesliga and eight times in the DFB Cup. The figures for these matches speak for themselves. Leverkusen have already won 37 of these games, while Gladbach have only been victorious 25 times. A total of 30 times the two sides have shared the points. The last encounter took place at the BayArena, where Leverkusen did not bring their usual strength to the pitch. On that occasion, Gladbach managed to wrest a 0-0 draw from the Werkself.
