Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. Borussia Dortmund
At the early conclusion of the Bundesliga’s first leg, a real top match awaits us on Friday evening. The 111th Borussian duel will take place in Mönchengladbach. For both teams, it is the 3rd competitive match in just seven days, as there was an English week in the Oberhaus due to the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. While Gladbach and Dortmund still won their respective games last weekend, both lost last Tuesday. The Foals lost 1:2 to second-bottom VfL Bochum and BVB went down 0:2 in Wolfsburg. Before the kick-off of Friday’s clash, the two Borussians are separated by six points.
The visitors from Westphalia go into the match in fourth place in the table, whereas the team from the Lower Rhine will start the game in ninth place. In addition, the team of coach Daniel Farke not only has to make up for the defeat in Bochum, but also the heavy 0:6 defeat that Gladbach suffered in the last encounter with BVB. Whether the Foals will indeed bounce back against BVB, you can read in our Gladbach – Dortmund betting tip.

Gladbach Form & Balance Check
Borussia from Mönchengladbach is a real surprise package. You never know what you’re going to get when you attend a match involving the Fohlenelf. Although the development under Daniel Farke, who took over Gladbach at the start of the season, can be regarded as mostly positive in this first half of the season, a certain consistency cannot be found in the lexicon of the Fohlenelf.
After 14 games, Gladbach have five wins, four draws and five defeats. Part of the truth is that the 3:1 victory in the last home game over VfB Stuttgart is the only one from the last five games. Looking at the last four games, this match is even the only one in which the Foals scored. The duels with Frankfurt, Union Berlin and Bochum were all lost. Before the start of the next matchday, Borussia is now a full six points behind 4th place.
Goal difference on the rise
While striker Marcus Thuram is one of the Bundesliga’s most prolific scorers with nine goals and the goal difference is still positive at 24:22, the goals conceded for Gladbach are increasing rapidly. While the Niederrhein side conceded only twelve goals in their first nine games, Farke’s team conceded a whole ten goals in the last five games alone. Borussia have failed to keep their clean sheet for seven games.
Of all the teams up to 12th place in the table, only Bremen conceded more goals than Gladbach. With 24 goals, their own offensive scored more goals than Dortmund, Freiburg, Union and Wolfsburg. However, the aforementioned clubs all rank ahead of Borussia in the table. It is therefore the defence that often screws up better results. Gladbach even conceded two goals from second-division side Darmstadt and were eliminated from the DFB Cup.
Gladbach facts & analysis
– Gladbach are in 9th place in the table with 19 points.
– Borussia last lost with 1:2 in Bochum
– The Fohlenelf lost three of the last four games
Dortmund form & balance check
Not only the Fohlenelf is performing very inconsistently this season, but also BVB is getting questionable results. On Saturday, coach Edin Terzić’s team swept VfL Bochum off the pitch with a 3-0 win in the “Revierduell” and recorded their third win in a row. This brought Borussia back within two points of Bayern and justifiably rekindled their hopes of winning the championship. However, the truth is that the results are often better than the football.
Those who watched the game in Wolfsburg on Tuesday saw a Borussia that was unconvincing and quite rightly lost 0:2. For that to happen, Dortmund would have had to lose the game in Frankfurt. Goalkeeper Kobel alone saved the victory of the Black and Yellows on the Main several times. Against Wolfsburg, BVB had 68% of the ball, but were only dangerous in standard situations. In addition, Borussia had fewer shots on goal than VfL. The way BVB are playing football at the moment is simply uninspired.
Little offensive drive
Not only on Tuesday, BVB dominated the game in terms of possession, but remained harmless. In the previous 3-0 home win over VfL Bochum, all three shots on goal ended up in the Revierclub’s net. Also in the 2-1 away win in Frankfurt, both shots by Bellingham and Brandt landed in the opponent’s goal. Although BVB is very effective in its victories, in recent games Borussia has often been pale in attack despite scoring numerous goals and dominating possession. The defeat in Wolfsburg is proof of this.
The fact that Dortmund is actually more effective than convincing with offensive football is also confirmed by the xGoals. So far this season, the Westphalians have scored 25 goals. Dortmund only has an xGoals value of 23 goals. BVB thus scored three more goals than expected. In addition, the expected number of goals conceded is exactly 17, although BVB have only conceded 15.
Dortmund facts & analysis
– Dortmund are in 6th place in the table with 25 points.
– BVB last lost with 0:2 in Wolfsburg
– Borussia won three of their last five games
Predicted line-up – last update on 10 November 2022
Currently Borussia Mönchengladbach has a big problem at the goalkeeper position. Not only is No. 1 Yann Sommer injured (torn ankle ligament), but substitute Tobias Sippel was also out against VfL Bochum (tendonitis), leaving youngster Jan Olschowsky in goal in Bochum. The 20-year-old will also have to start against BVB, as coach Farke said of Sippel: “He had tendinitis from the Stuttgart game. And then he tried to get through the final training somehow. But that didn’t work. He couldn’t move. That’s why it didn’t make sense to take him along. We’ll have to wait and see how things develop.” Sommer will be out until the start of the World Cup anyway.
Furthermore, the Foals will have to do without the two centre-backs Doucouré (capsule injury) and Jantschke (thigh problems) and the two midfielders Neuhaus (partial damage to the cruciate ligament) and Wolf (shoulder injury) against Dortmund. Systematically, Gladbach will play with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Thuram will be brought into play by Hofmann, Stindl and Pléa, as has been the case so far.
BVB will also go into Friday night’s match with some personnel worries. With Meunier (fractured cheekbone), Morey (knee surgery) and Wolf (balance problems), three right-backs are out for Dortmund. Left-back Rothe is also questionable due to a bone sprain. The same applies to captain Reus, whose inflammation in his ankle is very persistent. Winger Bynoe-Gittens is also out due to a shoulder injury.
Midfielder Dahoud suffered the same injury last week. In addition, striker Haller continues to be out anyway due to his testicular cancer diagnosis. Due to the problems on the right side of defence, Süle took over this position last week. Öczan replaces Dahoud and Brandt takes over the role of Reus on the ten. Coach Edin Terzić relies on a 4-2-3-1 formation with Adeyemi and Reyna on the flanks. It remains to be seen whether Moukoko or Modeste will striker at Borussia-Park.
