Freiburg Form & Balance Check

Freiburg faced VfL Osnabrück away in their first cup game of the season. The hosts had been relegated from Bundesliga 2 the previous season, so this draw meant a must-win for the SC. And that’s exactly how the Breisgauers played. In front of almost 16,000 spectators, it took half an hour before Höler broke the spell and put one of the many chances into the Osnabrück net. Grifo’s second goal less than three minutes later seemed to be the deciding factor. VfL hardly did anything in the second half and Freiburg scored two more goals to secure a 4-0 win and a successful dress rehearsal

Home weakness

There was hardly any particular home advantage for Freiburg last season. In fact, they only picked up two more points at home than away. In 17 home games, they recorded five wins, seven draws and five defeats. These results put them in 15th place in the home table. If they want to play for the European places again this year, they will now need a clear improvement in performance at home.

Freiburg facts & analysis
  • Last game won 4:0
  • Tenth place in the table last season
  • Last home game against VfB lost 3-1

Stuttgart Form & Balance Check

Stuttgart also had a cup to play for last weekend, but not the DFB Cup. They played away in the Supercup final against Leverkusen. The game was at operating temperature right from the start and the Swabians coped well with going behind in the 11th minute, responding with a 1:1 equalizer just four minutes later. They then had much more of the play in the second half, partly because Leverkusen received a red card shortly before the break and had to continue playing short-handed.

Stuttgart made the most of their superiority and took a 2:1 lead after just over an hour. However, Leverkusen picked up exactly where they had left off and managed to level the game in the final minutes. VfB then drew the short straw in the subsequent penalty shoot-out and lost their first game of the season

Away strength

There are certainly reasons for optimism for VfB Stuttgart ahead of this match. While Freiburg were not necessarily known for being able to play to their home advantage last season, the Swabians feel right at home on foreign turf. In 17 away games, they picked up ten wins – the second-best tally in the league – one draw and conceded six defeats. Their 31 points put them in second place in the away table

Stuttgart facts & analysis
  • runners-up
  • Last game lost on penalties
  • In the last two meetings with Freiburg they scored a total of eight goals

Coach Julian Schuster will probably line up his team as he did in the last cup game. In a 4-4-2, they want to consolidate the center and at the same time come through the wings. They will also stick with the same eleven for the time being. Gregoritsch and Muslija could be an option during the game.

Stuttgart’s system and line-up will also be based on their last game. In a 4-2-3-1, they made life very difficult for Leverkusen. It is possible that Undav will once again be deployed as a kind of hanging striker, with Leweling likely to take a place on the bench for the time being
