After both teams had a tough time in the DFB Cup during the week, the ninth matchday of the Bundesliga is now upon us. SC Freiburg will host FSV Mainz 05 at the Europa-Park Stadium. In terms of the table, this duel pits fifth place against 13th place. Freiburg won 2-1 against HSV in the cup during the week and are therefore through to the next round. In the league, Julian Schuster’s team recently suffered a 3-1 setback in Leipzig.

For Mainz, it was the cup at home against Bayern this week. They lost 0-4, with all goals coming in the first half and Jamal Musiala scoring a hat-trick. In the league, they recently drew 1-1, also at home, against Gladbach. Freiburg Form & record check

SC Freiburg have won three of their last four Bundesliga home games under coach Julian Schuster, which is more than their predecessor Christian Streich won in his last 13 home games (only two wins and seven draws). Under Schuster, Freiburg have primarily relied on pressing sequences, with 104 this season. That is the third-highest number in the league, behind Pauli and Bayern. Fourth-placed Mainz have 100.

Doan and Grifo on the way to success

Freiburg’s Ritsu Doan has been directly involved in one goal in each of his last three Bundesliga appearances. He has never managed more games in a row. However, Doan has already scored four goals against Mainz, more than against any other club.

Vincenzo Grifo made an assist in three Bundesliga games for the first time since 2021, equaling his personal record. With five assists, he is the top scorer in this Bundesliga season. However, he only managed one goal in 14 Bundesliga games against Mainz and no assists at all.

Freiburg facts & analysis
  • Won three of four Bundesliga home games
  • Also won last home game in the DFB Cup against HSV
  • Fifth place in the table, level on points with third and fourth place

Mainz Form & Record Check

1. FSV Mainz 05 have picked up seven of their nine points on the road and have not been beaten in seven away games – eight unbeaten away games would be the club record, last set in 2021. In addition, Mainz could remain unbeaten in their first four away games of a Bundesliga season for the first time since 2014 – that would also be a club record. In each of the last four Bundesliga away games, Mainz scored three times – the current club record. Five away games in a row would even break the Bundesliga record.

FSV are currently without a win in their last 13 Bundesliga Sunday games and have only picked up seven out of a possible 39 points. Their last Bundesliga win on a Sunday was against Werkself Leverkusen in February 2023.

No firepower without Burkardt

Record cup winners FC Bayern Munich were too strong for 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the second round of the DFB Cup. Mainz lost 4-0 at the MEWA ARENA on Wednesday evening. The game was effectively decided by half-time, when Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala scored twice and once three times. In the second half, Bayern shifted down a gear and comfortably defended their lead, while Mainz rarely posed a threat.

Mainz coach Bo Henriksen made two changes to the team that played in the last game, including Bayern loan players Gabriel Vidovic and Armindo Sieb, who tried their hand at attacking. Nevertheless, Mainz lacked penetration in attack – in particular, the injured Jonathan Burkardt was sorely missed, without whom Mainz rarely posed a threat in front of goal.

The team will sorely miss him in the game against Freiburg. In the previous season, the 05ers conceded seven defeats in 13 Bundesliga games without him, but only six in 21 games with him.

Mainz Facts & analysis
  • Unbeaten in seven Bundesliga away games
  • Without a win in their last 13 Sunday games
  • Mainz without key player Burkardt

Freiburg will play in a 4-2-3-1 formation again under coach Julian Schuster. Schuster can currently rely on Doan and Grifo, especially in offense. Furthermore, Freiburg will be determined to get their next home win and remain unbeaten in their last few duels against Mainz. The SCF are without Manuel Gulde (back problems), Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (knee surgery), Kenneth Schmidt (abdominal muscle injury) and Merlin Röhl (syndesmosis ligament rupture).

The Mainzers will line up again in a 3-4-2-1 system under coach Bo Henriksen. In contrast to the cup, Henriksen will most likely rotate Lee back into the starting lineup. Jenz was substituted out of the last cup game with an injury and is questionable for the game, as is Amiri. In the Mainz defense, we could see the veteran Bell, who Henriksen had raved about after the cup. Kohr could rotate into midfield, with Da Costa moving into defense for him. Other Mainz absentees are Hanche-Olsen (broken toe) and Nikolas Veratschnig (unknown injury).
