SC Freiburg vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach

In the Bundesliga, SC Freiburg are indeed still fighting for a place in the Champions League four matchdays before the end of the season. Before the home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, fourth place in the table is just one point away. We will find out on Saturday at the Europapark Stadion from 3:30 pm whether Christian Streich’s team can clinch the next three points against the Foals.

Both teams will remember the first leg very well. After 37 minutes, the visitors from Freiburg were already leading 6:0, which was also the final score. It was not only Freiburg’s highest Bundesliga win, but also the first time that an away team in the Bundesliga was leading 5-0 after 25 minutes. The decisive factor on this day was above all the standard strength of the Breisgauers. Four of the 21 goals of the season were scored from stationary balls (Bundesliga best) in this match alone.

The Foals should therefore have a score to settle with their upcoming opponents. Whether they will settle it in our opinion and what else we think about this game, you can read now in our Freiburg vs Gladbach tip.

Freiburg Form & Balance Check

It could be by far the most successful season in Freiburg’s club history. Four matchdays before the end of the season, the Breisgauer are just one and three points away from fourth and third place in the table respectively, both of which would entitle them to participate in the Champions League at the end of the season. In addition, the Sport-Club still has the chance to secure the DFB Cup for the first time in the club’s history on 21 May in Berlin’s Olympiastadion. It is more than impressive how Christian Streich & Co. have taken this club, whose goal was never anything other than staying in the league, forward bit by bit in recent years.

Breisgau in captivating form

After the performances of the last few weeks and months, one can say with a clear conscience that the Breisgauer definitely deserved to be in the top flight. Of the last nine Bundesliga encounters, SC have only lost one – at home with 1:4 against the serial champions from Munich. Apart from that, there have been an impressive five wins and three draws in this period.

In their own stadium, Freiburg have recently scored an impressive 17 out of a possible 24 points. After the recent 3-0 win against Bochum, they are now looking for their ninth home win of the current season against Gladbach, who have been disappointing of late. Should they succeed, the Sportclub would also set a new record of 15 victories this season, which dates back to the 2000/01 season.

Freiburg facts & analysis

 – 51 points from 30 games
 – Last win 3:0 against Bochum
 – Lost only 1 of last 9 matches
 – None of last 13 home games against Gladbach lost

Gladbach form & balance check

While SC Freiburg have everything at stake in the final spurt of the season, Borussia from Mönchengladbach will be happy when the current season is finally over. Even though there have been successful periods in between, there has never been any real consistency in the play of the Foals. Especially in the new calendar year, Adi Hütter’s eleven did not leave a particularly good impression – especially due to the many home defeats. Between 5 December and 22 January, Gladbach even suffered four defeats in a row at home, starting with the 0:6 loss against SC Freiburg.

Derby defeat puts a damper on the upswing

The last few weeks were going quite well again until the recent 1:3 derby defeat against 1. FC Köln. Before that, three of four matches (vs. Hertha, in Bochum and in Fürth) were won with 2:0 each. Apart from that, there was also a 1-1 draw against FSV Mainz 05. It was the first and only time this season that the Foals survived four games in a row without defeat.

The disappointing season is likely to result in a major shake-up in the summer. Several stars are apparently on the sidelines. Especially on the offensive side, things are expected to change in order to make it less easy for opponents to outmanoeuvre the team in the future. Breel Embolo, Alassane Plea (four each) and the recently absent Marcus Thuram (three) were responsible for eleven of Borussia’s last twelve goals in the Bundesliga.

Gladbach facts & analysis

 – 37 points from 30 games
 – Last lost 1:3 against Cologne
 – Won last 2 away games
 – 11 of last 12 goals scored by Plea, Thuram and Embolo

Predicted line-up – last update on 21 April 2022

SC Freiburg will still have to do without Keitel and Schade, who are out with different injuries. In the starting eleven, things could turn out differently in a few positions than we expected. Instead of Kübler and Eggestein, Schmid and Haberer could also play. In the forward line, Petersen as well as Demirovic and Höler are possible options. A three-man backline is also always within the realms of possibility for Sportclub.

At Borussia, only Marvin Friedrich (Corona) is out. Several options are also possible in Borussia’s starting eleven. Instead of Embolo and Kramer, Thuram and Neuhaus could also play. Should the injured Ginter not be fit, there could be a switch to a four-man backline.
