SC Freiburg vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach
SC Freiburg have steadily improved in recent years and this year have made the best start in their Bundesliga history with twelve points from their first five games. On the coming matchday, the Breisgau side will be looking to add to their points tally against their favourite opponents from Mönchengladbach. Find out what our predictions are for the upcoming clash with the Foals in our Freiburg vs Gladbach betting tips.
The Sport-Club is currently top of the table for only the second time in its history (previously only on matchday 1 of the 2000/01 season). Even if this is no more than a nice snapshot, the strong start to the season shows how well the team has developed under Christian Streich in recent years. The visitors from Mönchengladbach have also started the season well, but suffered their first defeat on the last matchday against Mainz (0:1).
In Breisgau, the Foals now want to avert the second defeat in a row. Statistically, it doesn’t look bad at all: Gladbach has been waiting for a defeat away from home for six Bundesliga games this season (first two wins, then four draws). Most recently, Borussia even picked up a point at FC Bayern.

Freiburg Form & Balance Check
Everything continues to run like clockwork at SC Freiburg. In the Bundesliga, the Breisgauer have recently bounced back with three wins after the 1:3 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund, and the start in the Europa League was also successful last Thursday. Against the Azerbaijani representative Qarabag, Freiburg won 2-1 with early goals from Grifo (7th) and Doan (15th).
In terms of the course of the game, it was once again the usual picture. Freiburg were well in the game from the first minute and took a 1:0 lead, as they have done in every Bundesliga game so far. After the 2:0, however, Streich’s eleven largely stopped their offensive play and concentrated on their core business, namely compact defending. From time to time, things got a bit dicey, but all in all, the offensive efforts of the Azerbaijani champions were too harmless.
New additions and standards let Freiburg rejoice
The reasons for the strong start to the season are quickly identified. On the one hand, the newcomers did not need any start-up time at all, seven of Freiburg’s ten goals for the season were scored by Gregoritsch (3), Doan and Ginter (2 each). On the other hand, the Breisgauers are again very stable defensively. They have even finished three of the five league matches so far without conceding a goal. Last but not least, we don’t want to leave the strength after resting balls unmentioned. Just like last season, Freiburg are already the Bundesliga team with the most goals from standard situations (5).
Freiburg facts & analysis
– 12 points from 5 games
– Last win 3:2 in Leverkusen
– Already scored 5 goals from standards
Gladbach form & balance check
While SC Freiburg were in Europa League action for the first time during the week, Borussia Mönchengladbach were able to take their time preparing for the upcoming Bundesliga fixture. The Foals have had a very disappointing year and are looking to do much better again this season without the double burden. The start of the season was quite promising in this respect.
The first two home games against Hoffenheim (3:1) and Hertha BSC (1:0) were both won, while away BMG started with two draws at Schalke (2:2) and in Munich (1:1). Last weekend against Mainz, however, the immaculate home record could not be extended. Aaron Martin’s wonderful free-kick goal (55th) meant that the Foals were beaten 0:1 by FSV in front of their home crowd.
Fohlen with serious absences
The omens for the away match in Freiburg, however, could be much better. As already mentioned, Gladbach have not won any of their last 14 away games in Breisgau. In addition, Ko Itakura and Alassane Pléa, two key players, are not available. Youngster Luca Netz and the recovered Lars Stindl are expected to replace them in the starting eleven.
Gladbach facts & analysis
– 8 points from 5 games
– Last lost 0:1 against Mainz
– Itakura and Pléa out
Predicted line-up – last update on 9 September 2022
The hosts will still have to do without Roland Sallai, Lucas Höler and Kiberly Ezekwem against Gladbach. The starting eleven will therefore line up on its own, with only Michael Gregoritsch moving into the starting eleven for Nils Petersen compared to the Europa League opener.
Ko Itakura is suspended for the visitors. We expect Ramy Bensebaini to replace him in central defence and Luca Netz to play at left-back. Julian Weigl is expected to wait further for his starting eleven debut for Borussia. Lars Stindl is expected to play in place of the injured Alassane Pléa.
