SC Freiburg – Eintracht Frankfurt
During the week, several teams had to play in the European Cup. Among them are the teams from Freiburg and Frankfurt, who face each other in the Bundesliga on Sunday afternoon. On this 22nd matchday, everything is at stake for the two rivals and contenders for the international places. Frankfurt are currently three points ahead of Breisgau and could extend and consolidate their position in the Conference League with a win. Should Freiburg win, they would draw level.
The visitors from Frankfurt played the first leg of the knockout round play-offs for the last 16 of the Conference League at Belgian league leaders Saint-Gilloise during the week and, despite taking an early 2-0 lead, only drew 2-2 in the end.
Freiburg were also active during the week and fought out a 0-0 draw at relegated Champions League side Lens. They are in a good position for the second leg at home to secure a place in the last 16 of the Europa League.
Both SC and Eintracht want to enjoy the pleasure of traveling through Europe’s stadiums again next season and are therefore both desperate to win. Find out who will come out on top in this clash in our Freiburg – Frankfurt betting tip.
Freiburg – Frankfurt info
- Date & Time: 18.02.2024, 3:30 pm
- Location: Europa-Park Stadium, Freiburg
- Competition: Bundesliga, Matchday 22
Freiburg Form & Balance Check
Freiburg go into this clash with a not exactly strong record. However, the 0-0 draw at RC Lens can be seen as a success, as the Black Forest side are the underdogs in their clash with the relegated Champions League side. They had previously suffered three consecutive defeats in the league. SC have picked up just four points from their last five games and were therefore unable to benefit from Frankfurt’s weak spell. Coach Christian Streich’s team remain in seventh place in the table, one point ahead of Hoffenheim in eighth. A win would see Breisgau catch up with Eintracht, but they would still be behind Frankfurt on goal difference
Offense is lacking
Freiburg are currently lacking offensive power. The team has recently gone goalless twice and has scored just two goals in its last four games. Over the season as a whole, SC have not been particularly dangerous and have only scored 26 times so far. They have the fewest goals in the top 10 in the league and there are only five teams in the league with fewer goals. Strikers Roland Sallai and Michael Gregoritsch both have just three goals for the season. Freiburg’s offense therefore still has room for improvement
Freiburg facts & analysis
- Seventh place in the table
- Last game 0:0
- Last three defeats in a row in the league
Frankfurt Form & Balance Sheet Check
Frankfurt are still searching for their form and the 2-2 draw at Saint-Gilloise during the week was their third game in a row without a win. Eintracht have picked up just one three-pointer from their last five games. In the Bundesliga, they recently drew against Bochum and lost at 1. FC Köln.
In the table, however, the Hessians have managed to hold on to sixth place, as their rivals Freiburg and Hoffenheim are also struggling. Nevertheless, the chasing pack is breathing down Frankfurt’s neck. The gap to fifth place and thus the qualification spot for the Europa League is five points
Toppmöller criticizes team
Coach Dino Toppmöller was definitely miffed after the draw in Belgium. Eintracht squandered a 2:0 lead and failed to regain the lead in the last quarter of an hour, even when outnumbered. As a result, the team missed out on an ideal starting position for the second leg and is in danger of being eliminated from the competition. In an interview afterwards, Toppmöller said that his team lacked stability and that everyone was “preoccupied with themselves”. There will be a showdown against Freiburg for the important last international place and Frankfurt must hope to get back on track in this duel
Frankfurt facts & analysis
- Sixth place in the table
- Last game 2:2
- Without a win in three games
We expect a few changes to Freiburg’s starting line-up compared to the last game in Lens. Attila Szalai and Christian Günter could return to the back line in the 4-2-3-1 system. Jordy Makengo and Yannik Keitel will be on the bench for the time being. The suspended Merlin Röhl will be replaced by Vincento Grifo.
We expect Frankfurt to play a 4-1-2-2-1 formation with Saša Kalajdzić as the only real striker. Robin Koch will have to rest due to his 5th yellow card from the last league game. Philipp Max should be back in the starting eleven in his place. We also expect Junior Dina Ebimbe back in the starting eleven. Ansgar Knauff and Donny van den Beek are also options in attack
