Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Borussia Dortmund
The Bundesliga kicks off its 18th matchday next weekend and with it the second half of the season begins. As always, the second half of the year promises a whole lot of excitement and drama. In terms of the championship, it will probably come down to FC Bayern again this year. The Munich team already has 43 points and is nine points ahead of its first rival Dortmund. BVB will host the resurgent Eintracht from Frankfurt on Saturday at 6:30 pm and you can read what we think about this duel in our Frankfurt – Dortmund tip.
If we take a look at the Bundesliga table at the start of the second half of the season, we see Frankfurt Eintracht in a strong 6th place. The Hessians slept through the start of the season a bit, but coach Oliver Glasner’s team really picked up speed in time for the end of the year. Their upcoming opponents from Dortmund suffered an unnecessary 2:3 defeat at Hertha from Berlin at the end of the year, which means that they are already nine points behind FC Bayern. The Black and Yellows can therefore all but write off a possible championship.

Frankfurt Form & Balance Check
Frankfurt Eintracht’s first half of the season resembled a rollercoaster ride. However, the Hessians really made a mess of the start to the new season and many fans no longer believed that new coach Oliver Glasner was the right coach for the Hessians after just a few match days. At the end of the year, however, the performance of the Eagles was more than respectable and Frankfurt managed to pick up four wins and a draw from the last five games. The last three games were all won and the Hessians will therefore go into the upcoming top match against Dortmund with a more than broad chest.
Too dependent on Kostic?
Frankfurt’s development has been going steeply uphill for years and that is also closely linked to the name Filip Kostic. The Serbian is once again the Hesse’s top scorer this year and that’s where we have the Frankfurt’s supposed problem. Coach Oliver Glanser’s game is completely geared towards the strong left side around Kostic. If the Hessians really want to make it to Europe, then the Frankfurt game needs to be much more variable.
Frankfurt facts & analysis
– Strong 6th place
– Kostic already has 9 scorer points
– Already conceded 24 goals
Dortmund Form & Balance Check
The 2:3 in Berlin was the negative highlight of a completely messed up Hinrunde. Even though the Black and Yellows will establish themselves as Bayern’s number one chasers this season, their performances in the first half of the year were anything but satisfactory. With a nine-point deficit, coach Marco Rose’s team is now on the hunt to catch up, and a particularly tough opponent awaits them in Frankfurt on Saturday. If they lose another point, the championship will be over for good. For Rose, it will also depend on how he can stabilise the defence, which has been very shaky of late.
What will happen with Erling Haaland?
The force of nature from Norway is probably heading for his last half-season at BVB. Almost two years ago, the now 21-year-old striker had come to Dortmund from RB Salzburg. Since then, Haaland has developed into one of the best players in the world and BVB will not be able to keep him in the summer. Then he will be allowed to leave the Black-Yellows for 75 million euros. The Dortmunders have by no means given up the fight for their wonder striker. Watzke & Co. are prepared to increase his salary to a measly 15 million euros. That would make him by far the top earner at BVB. Money, however, does not seem to be the most important thing for Haaland, rather the Norwegian wants to win titles: Whether he can do that at BVB is more than questionable given his current form.
Dortmund facts & analysis
– Already 9 points behind Bayern
– Haaland stands at 13 goals
– Last lost 2:3 against Hertha
Predicted line-up – last update on 6 January 2022
The Frankfurt Eintracht wants to go with a 3-4-3 into the upcoming match against BVB. A lot will again go through the strong left side around Kostic. In attack, there are several players with Borré, Kamada and Lindstörm who are good for a goal. BVB can play with its best players in Frankfurt. Hummels returns and up front Haaland.
