Eintracht Frankfurt – FC Augsburg
We are already in the final phase of the season and some groundbreaking games await us on this 30th matchday of the Bundesliga. Even though the championship was decided early last weekend, there are still some decisions to be made. On Friday evening, there will be a direct duel in the battle for European Cup qualification. Neighbors Frankfurt and Augsburg will duel for the Conference League spot at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt.
Frankfurt conceded a 3-0 defeat to VfB Stuttgart last weekend and have to admit that they cannot keep up with the top teams in the league. However, despite unconvincing performances in recent weeks, the Hessians are stubbornly holding on to sixth place. Augsburg, on the other hand, are playing a great second half of the season and have stalked Eintracht. With a win, they would be level on points with Frankfurt and could even leapfrog them. They defeated Union Berlin on the last matchday and underpinned their claims to international business.

Frankfurt Form & Balance Check
Frankfurt can count themselves lucky to still be in pole position for a Conference League place. However, after mixed performances throughout the second half of the season, their lead could finally melt away this weekend.
Coach Dino Toppmöller’s team have also benefited from the fact that rivals such as Freiburg and Hoffenheim have also dropped points time and again, allowing them to hold on to sixth place in the table. The difference to fifth place is an unassailable 14 points. Eintracht have been waiting four games for a win and have collected five points from their last five games
Giving away points away from home
If Eintracht hadn’t dropped so many away points this year, they might no longer have to worry about the European Cup. The most recent defeat at VfB was the second away defeat in a row and Frankfurt have only won two of their eight competitive matches away from home in 2024. They conceded unnecessary goals, particularly in the final quarter of an hour, which ultimately cost them points.
In Dortmund, the two decisive goals were conceded in the final ten minutes, and in both Freiburg and Darmstadt, Toppmöller’s side only conceded the equalizer in stoppage time. This also puts the team under more pressure at home, where they need to pick up the necessary points instead
Frankfurt facts & analysis
- Sixth place in the table
- Last game lost
- Without a win in four games
Augsburg Form & Balance Check
After a draw and a defeat recently, Augsburg returned to winning ways last weekend and consolidated their position as top runners-up to Frankfurt. Since the second half of the season, coach Jess Thorup’s team have been playing great soccer and have already notched up six wins.
The points haul of 13 points from the last six games is impressive. With 39 points at present, the team is only three points behind Frankfurt, but Freiburg and Hoffenheim are also still in the race with 39 and 36 points respectively and are breathing down Augsburg’s neck. Should Leverkusen win the DFB Cup, seventh place would be enough for international business
Six-point game
For Augsburg, the game in Frankfurt is a six-point game, as a win would see them draw level with Eintracht and, should they win by at least two points, even overtake them. On the other hand, a defeat would increase the gap to six points and Augsburg would run the risk of missing out on qualification for international competition.
So it’s all to play for for Augsburg, because even with a view to the coming weeks, which will see them travel to Dortmund and Leverkusen, it’s these games like the one against Frankfurt that will be decisive in the end.
Augsburg facts & analysis
- Seventh place in the table
- Last game won
- Fifth best team in the second half of the season
Frankfurt play in a 3-4-2-1 system. We expect one or two changes to the starting line-up against Augsburg. Nnamdi Collins returns in the back three. Mario also returns to the squad after injury and should be in the first eleven. Coach Toppmöller will have to choose between Ansgar Knauff and Hugo Ekitiké up front.
Augsburg, on the other hand, are expected to field the same team as against Union last weekend. Tim Breithaupt made the most of his chance as a full-back in front of the back four and put in a strong performance. Goalscorer Sven Michel will again come off the bench as a substitute. Spaniard Pep Biel is available as an option for a midfield switch
Frankfurt – Augsburg head-to-head comparison & stats
This will be the 24th meeting between Frankfurt and Augsburg this weekend. The direct comparison is almost even, with Frankfurt winning seven games, Augsburg eight and eight games ending in a draw. Frankfurt still have a score to settle, as the first leg went 2:1 to FCA. The record of the last five meetings is also balanced, with three draws and one win for each team. The very first duel took place in 2012. At that time, Eintracht won clearly with 4:2.
