Everton -Liverpool Tip
The starting situation is clear. Liverpool are the heavy favourites, judging by their performances this season. The Toffees have not won a Premier League game since the end of September and are currently in their worst phase for what feels like an eternity. But it is precisely in such phases that a derby sometimes comes at the right time. These 90 minutes are not about playing football, but about who has the greater will and the greater commitment. That’s why Everton haven’t lost any of their last three derbies and that’s why the home side won’t be without their chances next Wednesday.
Everton Form & Balance Check
After a superb start to the season and 13 points from a possible 18 from their opening six games, Everton FC have slipped further and further down the table since the start of October. The Toffees have not won a game since beating Norwich City 2-0 on 25 September. In addition to the 1-1 draw against Manchester United and the 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, there have been five defeats in this period, including against supposedly weaker teams such as Watford FC (2-5) or last matchday at Brentford FC (1-0).
Toffees successful again against Liverpool?
At this stage, it might take a game like the derby against Liverpool FC to get back on track. Everton won their last league encounter 2-0 away from home, ending a 20-game winless streak against Liverpool in the Premier League. The last time the Toffees won two in a row was in the 1984-85 season, but a look at the statistics suggests a draw is much more likely. Eight of the last nine and each of the last four duels at Goodison Park have not found a winner.
Everton Facts & Analysis
– 15 points from 13 games
– Last lost 1-0 at Brentford
– Only 1 point from last 6 games
– None lost in last 3 derbies
Liverpool form & balance check
After the 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove and the 3-2 defeat at West Ham United, Liverpool FC have again won the last two duels in the Premier League as expected. Both Arsenal FC and Southampton FC were beaten 4-0 at the Anfield Road stadium within seven days. The most striking man in these games was Firmino substitute Diogo Jota, who scored a total of three of his team’s eight goals. Jürgen Klopp praised the Portuguese in the highest terms afterwards.
“He is an exceptional player and an exceptional boy. It was a perfect transfer for us a year and a half ago because he has everything a Liverpool player needs in this squad,” the German coach said of his charge. Against Everton, however, Klopp’s main priority will be for the 24-year-old to come through the game unscathed, just like all his colleagues. Prior to the derby, the former Dortmund man was extremely critical of the clash.
Klopp worries about his players
“I like physical football, I have no problem with it, we play that, other teams play that, but in this game there is often too much investment.” That intensity was felt by two Reds professionals in particular – Virgil van Dijk and Thiago – in their last clash at Goodison Park. The Dutchman ruptured his cruciate ligament after a hard tackle from keeper Jordan Pickford and was out for many months. Thiago was caught badly by Richarlison just before the end of the game and was out of action for two months with a knee injury. The statistics also back up his statement. In the history of the Premier League, Everton v Liverpool has seen more red cards (24) than any other fixture.
Liverpool facts & analysis
– 28 points from 13 games
– Most recently won 4-0 against Southampton
– Scored at least twice in each of their last 17 competitive games
– Already scored 5 90th minute winners against Everton
Predicted line-up – last update on 29 November 2021
The hosts will still have to do without Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Andre Gomes and Yerri Mina. Richarlison, on the other hand, will be available again after serving his yellow ban. He is expected to replace Rondon in the starting eleven.
For the Reds, Harvey Elliott and Roberto Firmino will be absent. The starting eleven could remain unchanged. Diogo Jota will certainly play again for Firmino. Otherwise, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is the only one who can hope to start.
