Borussia Dortmund – FSV Mainz
The 34th and final matchday in the Bundesliga is coming up this weekend. The match that Germany will be watching most closely on Saturday will take place in Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion. There, BVB will have the chance to wrap up its first championship since 2012. Borussia took advantage of Bayern’s slip-up the previous week and passed the record champions with a 3-0 win in Augsburg. Before the last game, the Black and Yellows now have a 2-point lead over the Munich team. With a win on Saturday, the championship would no longer be in BVB’s grasp.
The conditions could not be better for Dortmund. The Black and Yellows play in their home stadium and are hardly to be defeated there this season. BVB have only conceded four points at the Westfalenstadion in the entire season. Since the 2:2 against Bayern in October last year, no team has managed to take a point from Dortmund.
And the visitors from Mainz do not necessarily have the prerequisites to be a particularly dangerous opponent on Saturday. The 05ers played an extremely strong second half of the season and even came close to qualifying for the Europa League, but recently FSV’s form has been on a steep downward curve. Mainz lost their last four games in the Bundesliga and slipped down to ninth place. Accordingly, nothing is at stake for FSV in the last game. Find out in our Dortmund vs. Mainz betting tips whether the Nullfünfer can still blow up the black-yellow championship celebration.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check
BVB’s season will definitely go down as one of the most unusual in the club’s history. After the shortened second half of the season, Dortmund was only in ninth place and even qualification for the Champions League again seemed to be in danger. Some experts were already calling for the dismissal of coach Edin Terzić.
In the new year, however, BVB kicked off like a fire brigade and won the first eight league games. This series, together with slips by Bayern, even led to BVB securing the lead in the standings on match days 25 and 29. However, the Dortmund team always lost it again in the next round. Thanks to the Munich team’s slip-up, BVB will now enter the final matchday as the league leaders. The fans of the black and yellows will hope that their team can hold the position this time.
Stable central defence
For a few weeks now, Mats Hummels and Niklas Süle have formed BVB’s centre-back duo. Together, the two have conceded only three goals in the last five games. In addition, Mats Hummels announced this week that he has extended his contract, which expires in the summer, by another year.
His congenial partner could also achieve a real feat on Saturday. Niklas Süle is on the verge of becoming the second Bundesliga player to win the league title in consecutive seasons with two different clubs. Before him, only Gustl Starek achieved this feat, winning the title with Nuremberg in 1968 and Bayern Munich in 1969.

- Still without a point loss at home in 2023
- Second best offense in the league
Mainz form & balance check
Mainz 05 presented themselves as the surprise team of the second half of the season for a long time. After finishing the first leg in twelfth place, FSV put in an impressive performance. The Nullfünfer were almost unstoppable and in the meantime even remained unbeaten for ten games in a row.
The highlight of this impressive series was the 3:1 victory against the then league leaders from Munich. Since then, however, the team under the leadership of Bo Svensson has suffered four consecutive defeats. Mainz slipped back to ninth place in the table. The 4-1 defeat to Stuttgart last week also means that FSV now have no chance of qualifying for the UEFA Conference League.
Defensive loses its grip
In the second half of the season, Mainz impressed with an extremely strong defence until the Bayern game. In none of the first twelve games of the second half did FSV concede more than two goals. On average, goalkeeper Robin Zentner conceded only 1.08 goals in this period.
In the last few games, however, the defensive order of the Nullfünfer has been completely disrupted. In the last four games alone, FSV conceded 13 goals, the same number as in the previous twelve games. In addition, Mainz conceded at least three goals in each of the last four matches.
Mainz facts & analysis
- In 9th place in the Bundesliga table.
- Already five points more in the second half than in the first half of the season
- Last four defeats in a row
Predicted line-up – last update on 25 May 2023
Edin Terzić will not change his system and accordingly will go into this week’s game with a 4-3-3. The attacking trio of Malen, Haller and Adeyemi in particular have been impressive of late and have impressed across the board. Should Jude Bellingham be fit in time, he would move into the starting eleven for Raphaël Guerreiro. Otherwise, we expect the same starting eleven as in the previous week.
FSV Mainz 05 will probably start the last game with a three-man defence. Ludovic Ajorque, however, will be missing due to a yellow suspension. Aarón Martín will also play his last game for FSV on Saturday.
