Borussia Dortmund – Hertha BSC
There is the 21st matchday in the Bundesliga this coming weekend, among other things. Unlike in the last few years, when the record champion from Munich already had a huge lead over its direct rivals at this point, this season’s action is noticeably more exciting. First place and fifth place are separated by seven points. One team that has been rolling up the field from behind in recent weeks is the Black and Yellows from Dortmund. BVB will face Hertha from Berlin next Sunday. You can read what we think about this game in our Dortmund – Hertha tip.
All Dortmund fans will be very happy to look at the table at the moment. Coach Edin Terzić’s men are the only team, along with Union Berlin, to have started the new year with five wins. Last weekend, there was a commanding 2:0 victory over Werder Bremen. Their upcoming opponents from Berlin finally managed to record their first win of the new year after four defeats in a row. Coach Schwarz’s team won 4:1 against Borussia from Gladbach. Thanks to the three points, the Old Lady moved up to 16th place.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check
It looks as if nothing can throw BVB off course in their current form. After recent convincing performances in the Bundesliga, Dortmund also won against the Blues from London in the top flight. Against the men from the island, it was Karim Adeyemi who scored the golden goal of the evening with his speed.
Now it is time for BVB to focus on the Bundesliga again. BVB has always enjoyed playing against Hertha in recent years. The club from the pot has won seven of the last eight games against the Berliners.
Memories of 2011/12 come alive
Dortmund fans are eagerly awaiting a championship title. The last time the Black and Yellows were allowed to lift the trophy was in the 2011/12 season, which was also the season in which Dortmund won five games in a row for the last time. The Dortmund team is scoring points this season primarily with its youthful power. Dortmund’s U20 players have scored 15 goals so far – the highest number in the league. In comparison, the 17 other Bundesliga teams have the same number of goals as BVB.

Hertha Form & Balance Check
As Capital Bra says in his songs: “Berlin lives”. There is no other way to sum up Herthaner’s last game. Even though the team from the Olympiastadion once again fell behind, Hertha showed a great reaction and in the end won the game with a highly deserved 4:1. With Ngankam, Dardai and Scherhant, three boys from the youth of the Berliners also scored. Despite the victory, the club from the capital is still deep in the bottom of the table. The three points against Gladbach helped them to leave the direct relegation places and move up to 16th place. The Berliners are also expecting something on Sunday, because Hertha have won three of their four games this season on a Sunday.
Some season bests set
The win against Borussia from Gladbach was not only the highest of the season, but in the game against the Foals the Berliners ran more than in any other of the 20 games before. The Herthans covered a total of 121 kilometres, a full eight kilometres more than their opponents from Gladbach. The xGoals value of 2.6 was also higher than in any other game this season.
However, Hertha should not become overconfident, because the numbers do not necessarily indicate that there will be the next victory on Sunday. They have lost seven of their last eight games against BVB and have only managed four meagre points away from home this season.
Hertha facts & analysis
– Last win with 4:1 against Gladbach.
– First win 2023
– Only 4 away points scored
Predicted line-up – last updated 18 Feb 2023
Why should coach Edin Terzić make changes to his first eleven ahead of the upcoming match against Hertha? Dortmund have won all their games this year and the central defence of Süle and Schlotterbeck in particular seems to have finally settled in. Can will play alone on the six again. Bellingham and Reus will probably start in the centre. Öczan would move to the bench for this. If Adeyemi gets a break, Reyna should play from the start. In attack, we expect Haller to be the only top player again.
The Old Lady from Berlin will also start without major changes. Coach Schwarz will again rely on a 3-5-2, with Cigerci and Serdar swapping positions on the six and eight. Ngankam and Niederlechner will again start up front.
