Borussia Dortmund vs. Hertha BSC
On the 34th and thus last matchday of the Bundesliga, only a few important decisions are still to be made. The first to third places in the table have already been decided, but anything can happen between fourth and seventh place. In the bottom of the table, Arminia Bielefeld only have a theoretical chance of moving up to the relegation places with a resounding victory over RB Leipzig.
VfB Stuttgart and Hertha BSC are fighting a long-distance duel to see who can celebrate direct relegation from 15th place and who will have to tremble in the relegation play-off. Berlin’s season finale will take place at the same time as all the other games, starting at 15:30 at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park. BVB, on the other hand, can take a completely relaxed approach to the last matchday.
Even after two defeats in the last three games, the vice-championship can no longer be taken away from the Black and Yellows. Should Dortmund defeat the Old Lady, Stuttgart would have a secure place in the Bundesliga in their own hands with a win against Cologne. Whether we think Borussia will give VfB a helping hand and what else we think about this game, you can read now in our Dortmund vs Hertha tip.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check
With the signing of Karim Adeyemi, BVB have already announced their third top-class transfer for the new season over the course of the last week. After the confirmed departure of Erling Haaland to Manchester City, the Black and Yellows have thus clarified early on who is to replace the Norwegian in the centre of attack. Together with Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle, Dortmund have thus already signed three players before the end of the current season who will undoubtedly be regulars for years to come.
BVB must stabilise the defence
After a look at the current season, these transfers were also sorely needed. Dortmund has already scored 83 goals in this Bundesliga season (BVB record for a complete season is 84 goals), but due to the many goals conceded, it has still repeatedly dropped important points. At international level, too, it has always been the spotty defence that has broken the Black and Yellows’ neck time and again.
In the last few weeks, this problem has been made abundantly clear to BVB. Only one of the last seven Bundesliga games was finished without conceding a goal. In their own stadium, they even suffered a bitter 3:4 defeat against VfL Bochum. Last weekend in Fürth, Marco Rose’s team just managed to avoid another embarrassment. After the cloverleaf equalised 1-1 in the 70th minute, Julian Brandt (72nd) and Felix Passlack (77th) put BVB back on the winning track a short time later.
Dortmund facts & analysis
– 66 points from 33 games
– Last win 3:1 in Fürth
– 83 goals after 33 games (BVB record for a season is 84)
– Lost 2 of last 3 home games
Hertha form & balance check
With the two wins in Augsburg (0:1) and against Stuttgart (2:0), Hertha BSC had put themselves in a very good position to stay in the relegation zone not too long ago. However, the Berliners failed in the subsequent games to finally close the bag and thus avoid a tremor until the last matchday. On the penultimate matchday in Bielefeld, the Old Lady caught the 1-1 equaliser seconds before the final whistle. In the last match against Mainz, even a point would have been enough to secure relegation, but although FSV had previously failed to win eleven away matches in a row, they managed to win their last guest game of this season in Berlin 2-1 in the end.
Relegation would be the logical consequence
If the Capitals fail to win in Dortmund on Saturday, it would be Hertha’s weakest points haul in a Bundesliga season for ten years. It is one of many testaments to how far the chaotic capital club has fallen since the arrival of investor Lars Windhorst. Relegation would simply be logical after the countless mistakes made by the club and especially by the board in recent years.
In order to somehow prevent that from happening on Saturday, the calmness and experience of Felix Magath will once again be in demand, who, however, does not have good memories of his last duels with BVB. He took only one point from the last four meetings with Borussia Dortmund. The 68-year-old lost his last game in Dortmund in November 2011 with VfL Wolfsburg 1:5.
Hertha facts & analysis
– 33 points from 33 games
– Last lost 1:2 against Mainz
– First leg won 3:2
– 1 point is enough to stay in the class
Predicted line-up – last update on 12 May 2022
Borussia is also badly shaken in terms of personnel in the last game of the season. With Hummels, Schmelzer, Dahoud, Meunier, Hazard, Kobel, Tigges, Morey and Reyna, nine players are out due to injury. Donyell Malen could at least return to the squad. The starting eleven therefore almost makes itself up.
For the Berliners, there is still a question mark behind some players. Besides captain Boyata, Plattenhardt and Selke are still questionable. Alternatives are Dardai/Stark, Björkan and Belfodil. Otherwise, no personnel surprises are to be expected on the last matchday in this explosive situation.
