Dortmund Form & Balance Check
In the previous season, Dortmund only lost out on the German championship on the final matchday. This season, however, BVB will no longer be in the championship race. Currently, league leaders Leverkusen are already 15 points ahead of the Schwaz-Yellows. Dortmund, on the other hand, are only 4th in the table and suffered another setback in the previous week.
In Heidenheim, BVB created far too little in front of goal and were well served with a 0-0 draw at the end of the 90 minutes. In the last twelve games, Borussia has only managed four wins. Compared to the previous season, however, Dortmund only have three fewer points to their name
More than individual class?
In the previous week’s match at Heidenheim, Borussia Dortmund created almost no clear-cut goalscoring opportunities and ended the 90 minutes with an xG value of just 0.64. It is particularly striking that Dortmund’s most creative players were absent from this match. Julian Brandt, Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho, three playmakers, were all absent.
Even though BVB still had plenty of quality in their starting line-up, the Borussia Dortmund attack was almost devastating. In the absence of these three players, with plenty of creative individual class, it was once again clearly demonstrated that Dortmund’s automatic playmaking mechanisms are only available to a limited extent. Coach Terzić will certainly be hoping for the return of the creative minds on Friday
Dortmund facts & analysis
- In fourth place in the Bundesliga
- Only won four of the last twelve games
- Top scorer is Niclas Füllkrug with new Bundesliga goals
Freiburg Form & Balance Check
SC Freiburg have secured a place in the Europa League in the last two seasons and have always finished in the top 10 of the Bundesliga in the last four seasons. Coach Christian Streich’s team is still right up there this season. In the 20 games so far, SCF have picked up a total of 28 points, which is nine points fewer than in the previous season.
Despite this, the Breisgau side are in a solid 7th place in the table and have their sights firmly set on the European places. Last week, however, the men from the Black Forest suffered a 3-1 defeat against VfB Stuttgart. After seven home games in a row without defeat, it was another setback for the Breisgau side at home
Günter back
In mid-July, Christian Günter suffered a broken forearm in a test match against Grashoppers Zurich. However, he returned to team training at the beginning of August. At the start of the season, the veteran was back on the pitch with a splint and also played in the DFB Cup against SV Oberachern, where he scored a goal. The left-back also contributed to the Bundesliga opener against TSG Hoffenheim with one assist in 90 minutes of action.
Shortly afterwards, he damaged his right forearm again in training. However, complications arose during the subsequent operation, meaning the 30-year-old was unable to play another game in 2023. Last matchday, however, the SC captain finally made his comeback after almost six months out of action

We expect the hosts from Dortmund to return to a 4-2-3-1 this week, with Reus, Hummels, Brandt and Sancho likely to return to the team. Sébastien Haller is still at the Africa Cup.
We expect Freiburg to return to a 4-4-2 on Saturday, with Kyereh, Schmidt and Lienhart out on Friday. Merlin Röhl will also be missing through suspension. Japan’s Ritsu Doan also only recently returned from the Asian Championship
