Dortmund Form & Balance Check

Dortmund are clearly aiming to compete for the championship again this season. For them, the main thing is to integrate the new transfers in such a way that the team dynamic improves significantly compared to last season. Last year, they only finished fifth and were only able to qualify for the Champions League because the Bundesliga had five starting places this year instead of four.

So clearly something must have changed in the summer if they want to attack this season. The 4:1 win in the DFB Cup against the regional league team from Lübeck was a successful dress rehearsal, but they will of course now face a different caliber in Frankfurt

Frankfurt is always possible

However, there seems to be some indication that Dortmund have the better cards ahead of the upcoming match. In the past, things have always looked good against Eintracht. In the last 15 encounters with Frankfurt, BVB have won nine times, drawn five and only lost once. Dortmund have only lost twice to Frankfurt at Signal Iduna Park since 2010. Naturally, this streak is set to continue

Dortmund facts & analysis
  • Fifth place last season
  • Last game won 4:1
  • Secret test against Verl lost 4-0

Frankfurt Form & Balance Check

Frankfurt finished in sixth place last season, but the gap to the top five was a full 16 points. This season, they want to close the gap to the Champions League places. Last weekend, they played their first competitive game of the season in the cup and delivered straight away.

They struggled a little in the first half against second-division side Braunschweig, but Dino Toppmöller seemed to have found the right words during the break. Within nine minutes, they led 3:0 and decided the game. A further goal of their own and a goal against saw them progress to the second round with a 4:1 victory

Return round fiasco

Eintracht definitely needed to use the summer break to evaluate and improve their performance. After playing a solid first half of the season last year, they collapsed in the second half.

They won just four of their 17 games, drew eight and were beaten five times. They finished eleventh in the table for the second half of the season with 20 points. If they take this performance into this season, things could look bleak for Eintracht.

Frankfurt facts & analysis
  • Sixth place last season
  • Last game won 4:1
  • Only won twice in Dortmund since 2010

Dortmund will start in a 3-4-2-1 as in the last game. In the cup game, Adeyemi was allowed to take over the center forward position, but it could now be time for Beier to take over this role from the start. Malen is also an option for the attack. Otherwise, coach Nuri Şahin will only make a few changes.

Dino Toppmöller will send his team out onto the pitch in a classic 4-2-3-1. We can expect roughly the same line-up that started in the cup last weekend. Of course, Knauff and Matanovic are an option, but Toppmöller will probably continue to rely on Ekitiké and Chaibi.
