1. FC Köln vs. FSV Mainz

After the exciting games during the week in the international competitions, there are again thrilling games to marvel at from the Bundesliga this coming weekend. On Saturday at 15:30, the Bundesliga clash between 1. FC Köln and FSV Mainz 05 will be a hot one. Both teams have, contrary to all expectations, quite little to do with relegation this season and we therefore believe in a close game. What we think about this match in detail, you can read in our Cologne – Mainz tip.

Cologne want to keep up the connection to the international places with a win against Mainz. Due to the unfortunate 0:1 defeat against Union Berlin last Friday, Cologne are now under a bit of pressure. Currently, FC is in eighth place with 40 points. The upcoming opponents from Mainz are in waiting position with their 38 points and should there be a win at FC, then the 05ers could climb further up the table.

Cologne Form & Balance Check

Cologne have indeed beaten themselves on the last matchday. On Friday evening, Cologne visited Union Berlin and suffered a more than unnecessary 0:1 defeat at the Alte Försterei. Above all, Jonas Hector, who is otherwise always sovereign, made a capital mistake, which was ultimately responsible for the defeat. In attack, Cologne had to do without goal-scorer Modeste, who had to pull out at short notice with a cold. With regard to the upcoming match against Mainz, coach Baumgart at least gives hope that the 15-goal man could at least be back in the squad.

The dream of Europe lives

This kind of season was not necessarily expected before at FC. Many experts feared that the Cologne team would be fighting against relegation again this year until the very end. However, coach Steffen Baumgart and his team have proven all critics completely wrong. The 40 points are more than outstanding, and if it should even be enough for Europe in the end, then everyone on the Rhine would be very happy. Another step towards Europe could be taken this weekend against Mainz.

Cologne facts & analysis

 – 8th place in the Bundesliga, 40 points.
 – Last lost 0:1 against Union
 – Last home match 1:1 against Dortmund

Mainz form & balance check

This coming Saturday, Mainz are on the pitch for the third time in six days and for the third time they have to play away from home. Last weekend, they drew 1-1 with Borussia Mönchengladbach, a result that could have been better in the end. During the week, the team had to play a catch-up match against FC Augsburg. However, Mainz lost 2-1 against the Bavarian Swabians, which did not exactly bring them any closer to the international stage.

Sensational development under Svensson

When Bo Svensson took over Mainz just under a year and a half ago, the 05ers had their backs to the wall. There were quite a few signs of relegation, but in the end Mainz kept the class. This season, the entire team took a big step forward. The defence is much more secure than in the years before and in attack, with Onisiwo and also Burkardt, there are two players who have proven to be very accurate so far. Mainz have become very unpredictable in attack and they will want to show that against FC on Saturday.

Mainz facts & analysis

 – In 10th place with 38 points.
 – Last lost 1:2 against Augsburg
 – Only 1 win from last 5 games

Predicted line-up – last update on 7 April 2022

The Cologne side will be doing everything they can to get their goalscorer Modeste fit again by next Saturday. Should the Frenchman become fit, he will play up front again in place of Andersson. Duda, Uth and Kainz will probably support Modeste. The upcoming opponents from Mainz will rely on a 3-3-2-2 system, with Burkardt and Onisiwo back up front. New internationals Stach and Lee will feed them with balls.
