Brighton & Hove Albion – Tottenham Hotspur
The holidays are now over and the Premier League does not take a break between the days. It’s no coincidence that the Bundesliga is also known as “the English week” when things come thick and fast. While some teams barely had time to catch their breath as they had to play on the holidays or even on Christmas Eve, the teams from Brighton and Tottenham had a bit of luck with the fixture list. As well as the Arsenal v Hammers game, this clash concludes Matchday 19 on Thursday night, giving the players a few more days off.
Brighton played their last game against Crystal Palace a week ago and have had plenty of time to prepare for the game against Spurs in addition to the Christmas break. They are not far behind the top clubs in the league in mid-table. Tottenham are in good form at the moment and won 2:1 at home against Everton last Saturday. Brighton Form & Balance Check
Brighton & Hove Albion are ninth in the table despite a somewhat weaker phase in recent weeks. However, coach Roberto de Zerbi’s team have not won in three games. Their most recent result was a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, followed by a 2-0 defeat at league leaders Arsenal. The team is currently on 27 points, seven points behind the international qualification places.
A home win against Tottenham would see Brighton close the gap on Spurs, who are nine points better off, and keep up the pressure on the other chasing pack. They could also make up a place or two in the table should one of their rivals, such as Man United, Newcastle or West Ham, drop points
Historic European Cup debut
The Brighton team made their first ever European Cup appearance this season and showed why they belong in international football. The team qualified early for the Europa League after a great group stage and even won the group on the last matchday with a 1:0 victory against Olympique Marseille just two weeks ago.
The team, which includes German international Pascal Groß, now awaits its eighth-final opponent, who will be determined in the play-offs. Among others, they could face Champions League relegated AC Milan, Galatasaray or Shakhtar Donetsk. Either way, reaching the round of 16 is a great achievement and was described by coach de Zerbi as “historic for Brighton.”
Brighton facts & analysis
- Ninth place in the table
- Two points from the last three games
- Currently nine points behind Tottenham
Tottenham Form & Balance Check
Tottenham Hotspur are in good form and have recently started a small winning streak. The 2:1 victory against Everton on the last matchday was Spurs’ third win in a row. As a result, the Londoners moved past Man City into fourth place and are therefore in a direct qualification spot for the Champions League. The team and their Australian coach Ange Postecoglou are therefore right in the thick of the title race, with only six points separating them from the top of the table.
A win would therefore be extremely important to keep the Citizens at bay and possibly even draw level with Aston Villa in third place. After the game in Brighton, there is a home game against Bournemouth before the New Year. Both are doable tasks and Tottenham have every opportunity to continue their winning streak
Second best away team
Tottenham have been convincing this season, especially away from home. The team has already picked up five wins away from home and has only suffered one defeat. That is the best result after Liverpool, who also have one more away game to their name. Tottenham’s ever-present Heung-Min Son has been particularly outstanding. The South Korean is once again having a great season and has already scored eleven goals this season, eight of them away from home.
Son was also celebrating in the last game against Everton after scoring to make it 2-0. The striker is already in his ninth season in a Spurs shirt and is also well known to German soccer fans from his years at Leverkusen and HSV.
Tottenham facts & analysis
- Fourth place in the table
- Last three wins in a row
- Goal ratio 37:24
Predicted lineup – last update on December 27, 2023
Brighton will play with a 4-5-1 formation with the German Pascal Groß in attacking midfield. We don’t expect any changes compared to the game against Crystal Palace. Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma is still listed as doubtful with an ankle injury. Jakub Moder could also move into the starting line-up in his place.
There is also no reason for Spurs coach Postecoglou to rotate much after the short winning streak. They will also field a 4-5-1 formation. Yves Bissouma is still serving a red ban and is still unavailable
