Brighton Form & Balance Check
Brighton & Hove Albion have coped better than suspected with the loss of their head coach Graham Potter to Chelsea. In fact, the Seagulls have been no less successful with Roberto De Zerbi and have been able to build on their strong start to the season with the Italian. Brighton have won four of their last six games in the Premier League and are now just one point behind Liverpool. After the 4-2 defeat at home to league leaders Arsenal, the southerners managed to send a fitting response at cellar-dweller Everton. Brighton led 4-0 in the blue of Liverpool before the Toffees got the consolation goal.
First three defeats
The strength of Brighton’s performance under De Zerbi so far is shown by their only three defeats in 13 Premier League games. By the way, the Italian made his debut against Liverpool FC, which ended in a 3-3 draw. However, the Seagulls did not win any of the first five games under De Zerbi. But things have been going well since then. Brighton took twelve points from the last possible 18. In addition, the goal difference is positive at 21:20. However, the 4:1 home win against Chelsea on matchday 14 is so far the only success at home under De Zerbi.
Brighton facts & analysis

– The Seagulls last won 4-1 at Everton.
– Under De Zerbi, Brighton have only lost three of 13 games.
Liverpool Form & Balance Check
Liverpool won their last home game against Leicester City 2-1, but only because centre-back Wout Faes gifted the Reds two fabulous own goals. It was already apparent here that LFC’s recent winning streak was on shaky legs. In West London at the Bees this was confirmed. Brentford led 2-0 at the break and Liverpool were lucky that VAR disallowed the third goal.
In the end, the team from the Merseyside lost 1:3 and thus for the fifth time this season. But there are positives to be found in the negatives. Most positive were the performances of 100 million purchase Darwin Núñez, who was the decisive factor in the attack in the recent 2-2 draw in the cup against Wolverhampton.
Already 22 goals conceded
While Liverpool took twelve points out of a possible fifteen from their last five games, they did not even win by nil. In fact, the Reds have not conceded in any of their last seven games. On 19 October, in a 1-0 home win over West Ham, goalkeeper Alisson’s box was kept clean for the last time. With 22 goals now conceded, Liverpool have conceded the second most of any team currently in the top six. Only Tottenham have conceded more goals. Never before under Jürgen Klopp have LFC conceded 22 goals after 17 games. On average, 1.2 balls per game end up in their own box.
Liverpool facts & analysis
– Liverpool are 6th in the table with 28 points.
– The Reds last lost with 1:3 at Brentford.
– Liverpool have conceded one goal in each of their last seven matches.
Predicted line-up – last update on 12 January 2023
Roberto De Zerbi was very successful with his 4-2-3-1 system at the Toffees and saw his team perform superbly in that approach. To add to that, Alexis Mac Allister is also back from the festivities with Argentina after their triumph in Qatar.
With the transfer of Dutchman Cody Gakpo, Liverpool gained another option for the front attacking chain. This is hugely significant as Luis Díaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino are still injured. In the 4-3-3 system, Klopp will therefore rely on Gakpo, Núñez and Salah up front against Brighton. James Milner and Arthur are out injured as possible candidates for the midfield.
