Werder Bremen – VfL Wolfsburg

Our Bremen v Wolfsburg prediction: Both teams to score? – 1.56 odds

  • The first leg between the two ended in a spectacle with a total of six goals
  • Wolfsburg has so far only failed to score in two league games
  • Bremen has always scored at least one goal in its last two home games

On Saturday, March 1, the Bundesliga clash between Werder Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg will take place at the Weser Stadium. After the bitter cup embarrassment against third division team Arminia Bielefeld (1:2), Bremen need to collect important points in the relegation battle. After three consecutive defeats in the league and the recent 5-0 defeat against SC Freiburg, the mood is tense. Players like Leonardo Bittencourt have already warned: “We think we’re the best.”

On the other hand, VfL Wolfsburg, under coach Ralph Hasenhüttl, wants to stop its own negative trend. The Lower Saxony team just lost 1-0 to RB Leipzig in the DFB Cup, and were annoyed about a controversial hand penalty decision. With 34 points in 8th place in the table, they could move closer to VfB Stuttgart (7th place) with a win. You can find out who is ahead here in our Bremen – Wolfsburg betting tip.

Bremen Form & Record Check

The Bremen team is in the throes of a serious crisis. Four defeats in their last five competitive games and the embarrassing 1-2 loss in the cup against Arminia Bielefeld have severely unsettled the team. On top of that, there was a 0-5 defeat against SC Freiburg, in which Werder had no chance. Although they were still able to win narrowly against Mainz 1-0, further setbacks followed in the league against Hoffenheim (1-3) and Bayern Munich (0-3).

The air is getting thin

In 12th place in the table, the gap to the relegation places still exists, but the trend is clearly pointing downwards. The loss of Marvin Ducksch, who was injured in the cup and is sorely missed as a creative force in attack, weighs particularly heavily.

Bremen facts & analysis
    • Twelfth place in the table
    • Won all of their last three league games
    • Lost 1-2 to Bielefeld in the cup during the week

At Werder Bremen, coach Ole Werner is likely to stick with the 3-5-2 system despite the recent setbacks. Zetterer is expected to be in goal. The back three could consist of Jung, Stark and Malatini, while Weiser and Köhn occupy the wings. In midfield, Stage and Lynen are conceivable in the center, flanked by Grüll on the offensive side. Silva and Njinmah are possible as a strike duo. However, the harsh words of Bittencourt and Stark after the DFB Cup elimination could lead to personnel changes. Stability is the order of the day to stop the slide.

Wolfsburg Form & Record Check

VfL Wolfsburg arrive at the Weser Stadium with a streak of three draws in their last four league games. They only managed to win 2-1 in Stuttgart before being unluckily knocked out of the cup 1-0 at RB Leipzig. The defense is stable, but shows weaknesses in the second half, where goals are often conceded. Offensively, there is a lack of consistency, even with Jonas Wind, a goal-scoring attacker, at their disposal.

Destination: Europe

With 34 points in 8th place in the table, contact with the upper half of the table is still present, but the Wolves have to take their chances more consistently in order not to slip further into the midfield. In fact, there were fewer than 2.5 goals in 80% of the last games – that’s not enough for a team with such potential.

Wolfsburg facts & analysis
      • 8th place in the table
      • Unbeaten in five league games
      • 0-1 defeat against Leipzig in the cup during the week

Ralph Hasenhüttl is expected to field a 4-3-3. The defensive line of Koulierakis and Vavro is likely to start together again, with Müller in goal. In midfield, Vranckx could command the center, supported by Dárdai and Kamiński. Skov Olsen and Tomás are expected to play on the wings, while Amoura is to provide goal-scoring danger in the front line. Whether Hasenhüttl will make tactical adjustments after the Cup disappointment will only become clear shortly before kick-off. With Bornauw or Gerhardt on the bench, there are alternatives in any case.

Bremen – Wolfsburg head to head & statistics

Werder Bremen have a slight edge over VfL Wolfsburg in the last five Bundesliga meetings, with two wins to Wolfsburg’s one. The teams drew twice. The last game was particularly sensational, with Werder winning 4-2 in October 2024. Before that, Wolfsburg won 2-0 at the Weserstadion in March 2024, and in November 2023 there was a 2-2 draw at the Volkswagen Arena. It is worth noting that at least two goals were scored in all of these games, which gives us hope for another goal-filled game.
