Werder Bremen – Union Berlin
During the week, the group stage in the Champions League went into the third round. This weekend, the Bundesliga will go into the 9th matchday. For a German participant in the premier league is then on Saturday in the conference a stark contrast. Because in Weserstadion it comes then to a real cellar duel. Who will prevail in this important duel, you can find out in our Bremen – Union tip.
However, the excursions into the top flight have not been particularly pleasing for the Eisern so far. The FCU also lost during the week, this time against Napoli, and is thus without points after three games. And in the league, too, things are not going well at all for the Eisernen. Since the second matchday, the Eisernen are without a point and thus slipped to 15th place.
The upcoming opponent from Bremen, however, suits the Köpenickers, as Union has won every game in the Bundesliga so far at Weserstadion. In addition, the SVW is level on points with the FCU in 14th place. Furthermore, Bremen lost their last three games and also lost 1-0 at Borussia Dortmund the previous week.

Bremen form & balance check
Despite a disappointing second half of last season, in which Werder Bremen could only record four wins, the SVW managed to secure a commanding 13th place in the table to stay in the league. However, the start of the new season was once again anything but smooth for the North Germans.
The Bremen team has only managed two victories so far this season. Both of these victories came at home. The opponents were Mainz 05 and 1. FC Köln, who are currently ranked 18th and 16th respectively. In the previous week, however, there was another disappointment for the North Germans when Bremen lost 0:1 in Dortmund.
Lynen knows Union
A new six-man was at the top of Bremen’s shopping list in the summer, as Christian Groß was not only reaching his limits in terms of age, but was also only able to keep up with the quality in the top flight to a limited extent. The North Germans found what they were looking for in Belgium and signed Senne Lynen. However, the 24-year-old has not yet got on so well in Germany.
In the preseason, however, the midfielder has already had good experiences with the upcoming opponent. Lynen and his ex-club St. Gilloise met Union Berlin a total of four times in the previous season. Those duels took place in both the Europa League group stage and the round of 16, with the Belgian side coming out on top. In the group stage, the midfielder also scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 away win at the Alte Försterei.

Union form & balance check
Union Berlin have enjoyed a groundbreaking rise in recent years, taking the Ironmen through the 2. Bundesliga, Conference League and Europa League to the Champions League. And at the start of the season, it looked like the rise would just continue. Because Union won the first two games of the season with 4:1 each and even jumped to the top of the table.
After that, however, everything fell apart for the Eisernen. On the one hand, the Köpenicker lost in every single game in the top flight so far and on the other hand, the Eisernen have also been without a point in the league since the end of August. After the defeat against Napoli on Tuesday, the FCU has now suffered new defeats in a row in the league.
Khedira is back
Rani Khedira has been an absolutely fundamental part of Union Berlin’s midfield in recent years. In 2021, the brother of the world champion Sami moved from Augsburg to the Wuhle. At the beginning of the season, however, the 29-year-old was absent due to injury. After the international break, however, the midfielder made his comeback.
The German-Tunisian also has very good memories of the upcoming opponent. Rani Khedira scored eight goals in the Bundesliga, three of which came against Werder Bremen. Among them was his very first goal on March 17, 2018, when he was still wearing the FC Augsburg jersey. His most recent goal, scored on May 27, 2023, as part of Union Berlin’s 1-0 win over Bremen, capped off this impressive run.
Union facts & analysis
- Fifteenth in the Bundesliga.
- Lost 0:3 against Stuttgart in the previous week
- The best defense of the past Bundesliga season
Predicted lineup – last update on October 26, 2023
Bremen will probably start in a 3-1-4-2 again against Union. We assume that Senne Lynen will return to the starting eleven. In addition, Amos Pieper is expected to return from injury. Niklas Stark, on the other hand, will continue to be out due to injury.
Union Berlin we also expect again in a three-man chain. In the forward line, we again expect the new German international Kevin Behrens. David Datro Fofana will probably not be in the squad at FCU.
