Werder Bremen – 1. FC Köln
On the penultimate matchday, there are four games in the Bundesliga Conference. One of them will take place in Bremen’s Weser Stadium. There, SV Werde Bremen will receive 1. FC Köln. For both teams, however, there is not much at stake on Saturday. The Bremen team is as good as saved. With two matchdays to go, SVW are five points clear of the relegation zone and in twelfth place.
A home game against the billy goats will probably bring back good memories for the fans of the northern Germans. In the final match of the 2019/20 season, SV Werder Bremen managed a convincing 6:1 victory over FC 1 Cologne. This important home win enabled the Bremen side to clinch the relegation spot and secure their place in the relegation play-offs against Heidenheim. With a win on Saturday, the SVW would once again finally avoid going down to the 2nd Bundesliga.
The guest from the cathedral city will be back in the top flight next year. Cologne currently occupy tenth place with 41 points. In the previous week, the Geißböcke took apart the last-place team from Berlin 5:2 at their home stadium, exuding a lot of enthusiasm for the game. Bremen Form & Balance Check
Werder Bremen are back in the top flight after a year’s absence from the 2. Bundesliga and have actually had very little to do with the relegation battle all season. Coach Ole Werner’s team is currently in twelfth place.
The SVW already had the chance to secure their relegation with a win on the last two match days. Unfortunate defeats against Bayern and Leipzig, however, prevented complete planning security on the Weser.
Bremen on the hunt for goals
Werder Bremen’s style of play is undoubtedly geared towards an impressive attack. Under the guidance of Ole Werner, a veritable offensive spectacle has developed on the Weser. SVW have scored an impressive 50 goals in their first 32 Bundesliga games, putting them above the top two teams Freiburg and Union Berlin.
However, this offensive orientation of Bremen occasionally reveals a weakness in the defence. Hardly a game goes by without Bremen conceding a goal. With 62 goals conceded, Werder has the fourth weakest defence in the entire league. In addition, the SVW has only conceded four goals this season.
Bremen facts & analysis
- In twelfth place in the Bundesliga table
- First five draws this season
- Only one win in last ten games
Cologne form & balance check
1. FC Köln already said goodbye to the relegation battle for good a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, the Geißböcke obviously still have enough motivation in the last league games. Coach Steffen Baumgart’s team lost only one of the last seven games.
The FC even won the last two matches. The success in the Rhineland duel against Leverkusen was followed by an even more convincing victory the previous week. In their home stadium, the cathedral city dwellers completely dismantled Hertha BSC and deservedly won 5:2.
Selke again against ex
In winter, Davie Selke made the leap from the Spree to the Rhine and from then on was to take on a significant role in the centre of attack for 1. FC Köln. Initially, however, the 28-year-old had difficulties finding his luck in the cathedral city. But in recent weeks, the former German youth international has made an impressive comeback.
With four goals in the last four games, the attacker is currently showing an outstanding rate. On Saturday, Selke will face an ex-club, as he did the previous week against Hertha. The centre forward played for Werder as a youth player and also took his first steps as a professional at the Weser. He played a total of 75 games for the Bremen first team.
Cologne facts & analysis
- Currently in tenth place in the league.
- Only one defeat in last seven games
- Even defeats already this season
Predicted line-up – last update on 18 May 2023
Bremen will again operate in their usual 3-5-2. In the forward line, top scorer Niclas Füllkrug will continue to be out injured. His partner Marvin Ducksch was also absent with an injury during the week, but will presumably be back in action against the Geißböcke.
We expect the Geißböcke to play in a 4-2-3-1 again, with Davie Selke likely to be back in the attacking centre against his former club. In addition, centre-back Timo Hübers will probably be looking to add to his tally in Bremen after his brace in the previous week.
