Borussia Mönchengladbach – SC Freiburg

A thrilling showdown is on the cards at BORUSSIA-PARK: Borussia Mönchengladbach host SC Freiburg, and just two points separate the two teams in the battle for the international places. Although Gladbach’s performance in the 1-1 draw against St. Pauli was rather mixed, coach Gerardo Seoane still sees his team on course. However, the Foals will have to do without offensive player Nathan Ngoumou, who will be out for the rest of the season with a torn Achilles tendon. There are also serious doubts about Philipp Sander’s availability due to heart problems. At Freiburg, the pressure is on new coach Julian Schuster after a series without a win, but the dream of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history still lives on – to achieve that, a win in Mönchengladbach is almost mandatory.

Gladbach Form & Record Check

The form of Borussia Mönchengladbach continues to improve. Three wins from their last five games have taken the team to 6th place in the table, just one point behind RB Leipzig. Although the 1-1 draw against St. Pauli was a small setback, the offensive consistency is impressive, with the team scoring at least once in each of their last five games. In particular, striker Tim Kleindienst has proven to be a reliable offensive force and will be important again for the clash against Freiburg. However, the injuries to Ngoumou and, presumably, Sander limit the options, making each point all the more valuable.

Looking at the line-up, Gladbach coach Seoane is likely to use a 4-2-3-1 system again. With Nicolas and Omlin out injured, Sippel is expected to keep goal. Scally, Itakura, Elvedi and Ullrich are expected in the back four, while Weigl and Reitz form the double six. In attack, Honorat, Pléa and Neuhaus are likely to operate behind the lone striker: Tim Kleindienst is considered set. After his Achilles tendon rupture, Ngoumou is definitely out; Sander is also likely to be out of the team for a long time.

Freiburg Form & Record Check

SC Freiburg are currently on a negative streak: none of the last five league matches have ended in victory, and most recently they suffered a painful 4-1 defeat against Dortmund. The defense also seems vulnerable at the moment – seven goals conceded in the last two games is unusual for the team, in which veteran Matthias Ginter should actually provide stability. At the same time, the offense has faltered, with even the usually reliable Vincenzo Grifo going without a goal recently. Nevertheless, the sports club remains within striking distance of Gladbach in 7th place and continues to hope to keep the dream of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time alive. Julian Schuster, once an assistant to legendary coach Streich, is now trying to end this dry spell as quickly as possible.

SC Freiburg will also stick to their favored 4-2-3-1 formation. Müller is expected to be in goal, with Kübler, Lienhart, Ginter and Makengo in front of him. Osterhage and Eggestein are expected in the defensive midfield, while the offensive three-man row of Doan, Grifo and Höler will operate behind center forward Adamu. Röhl is still out with heel problems, and first-choice keeper Atubolu (shoulder injury) remains out of action, as do Ogbu (Achilles tendon rupture) and Kyereh (knee surgery). Particularly Grifo is expected to perform better than last time, so that the team from the Black Forest can keep up their connection to the upper regions of the table.

Gladbach – Freiburg head-to-head & statistics

The head-to-head duels speak for themselves: Gladbach have not managed a single victory in the last five games against Freiburg. The sports club emerged as the winner twice, and three times they shared the points. The 0-3 defeat at BORUSSIA-PARK and the 1-3 defeat in the first leg this season are particularly painful for the foals. At least the statistics suggest that in around 80% of these encounters, fewer than 1.5 goals have been scored in the first half – an indication that the teams will be cautious at the start. It remains to be seen whether Gladbach will be able to make better use of their home advantage this time.
