After Bochum just avoided relegation last season, it was clear to everyone in charge that this season would bring enormous difficulties. And VfL does not yet seem to have overcome these difficulties. In the first five games, they only managed a draw at home against newly promoted Kiel, while they were beaten in the remaining four games.
With only one point on the account, Bochum is currently in 17th place in the table, level on points with bottom-placed Kiel. The gap to the relegation zone is already three points in this young season and Bochum now needs to score against Wolfsburg to avoid falling further behind.
Two faces
VfL Bochum have had two faces this season. In the first five games, they always performed very well in the first half, were able to stand compactly at the back and even pose a threat going forward. After the first 45 minutes, they were tied with Leipzig and Gladbach and even took a lead against Freiburg, Kiel and Dortmund.
If they had been able to hold these results to the end, they would be in a Champions League place with eleven points. But as we all know, a football game lasts 90 minutes and in this second half, Bochum seems to be falling apart. None of the half-time results lasted in the end.

Wolfsburg Form & Record Check
Wolfsburg have been playing below their potential for quite some time. They don’t seem to be harmonizing on the field and they lack the final consequence. The Wolves conceded three defeats out of the first four, only beating Kiel so far. On the last match day, they then met Stuttgart and were extremely lucky in an even duel that referee Sven Jablonski ruled that Karazor committed a foul and not Arnold.
Both were already on a yellow card before this action, so Karazor had to go down. After the game, a clear wrong decision was confirmed, but despite this advantage and a goal in excess, the VfL did not manage to bring the 2-1 over time, but conceded in the 90. +7. Minute still the balance. In the table, they are now with four points in 13th place and must be careful not to slip completely.
Weakness away from home
The current season is still very young, but last season Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team had a tendency to perform extremely poorly away from home. In 17 away games, they only managed to win four, drew three and conceded a whopping ten defeats.
That was the third-worst record in the 2023/24 season, with only Union Berlin and VfL Bochum (both eleven defeats) returning home with fewer points. In the current season, VfL Wolfsburg have won one and lost one away game, so the next game will determine the direction of this away trend.

Bochum had everything going for them until half-time last weekend, but then they collapsed. They will probably start in a 4-3-1-2 again and this time try to keep their concentration up for the full 90 minutes. Baldé is an option up front and Kwarteng could start in attacking midfield if coach Peter Zeidler decides to make some changes.
VfL Wolfsburg will take to the pitch in a 4-4-2 formation under Ralph Hasenhüttl. The coach could again rely on Gerhardt, who has served his red suspension. Wimmer is also available again, but for the time being, he is only good enough to be a substitute. Otherwise, we do not expect any major changes compared to the last game.
