VfL Bochum vs. Arminia Bielefeld
The Bundesliga enters its penultimate matchday this coming weekend. While the championship has already been decided, the race for Europe and the relegation battle are still hotly contested. Arminia Bielefeld, one of the bottom teams, will play VfL Bochum on Friday. However, the starting situation is hardly promising at the moment. Bochum, on the other hand, recently managed to stay in the league after another football festival and can now enjoy the rest of the season. The match kicks off on Friday at 20:30 at Bochum’s Vonovia-Ruhrstadion.
Our prediction for Friday’s match can be found in the following Bochum vs Bielefeld tip. Last Saturday, VfL were able to secure their place in the league, something that not many would have expected before the season. But in fact, the twelfth-placed Bochum are already secured with 39 points from 32 games, and the relegation place is a comfortable ten points away. Bielefeld, second from last, are still two points behind the 16th-placed team. The relegation might be the last straw for Arminia, a non-relegation place is hardly achievable with six points away.

Bochum Form & Balance Check
So the Bochum side have actually done it. Contrary to most predictions, the promoted team will remain part of the Bundesliga next year. With almost 40 points and two games left to play, the VfL has well deserved this, especially their home strength and the fanatical fans there have been decisive throughout the season. Both the offence and the defence of the twelfth-placed team in the table do not perform particularly well in a league comparison, but Bochum have still always been able to score at the right time and have racked up a whopping eleven victories in the process.
Games for the ages
Most memorable of all will be two football celebrations against the two biggest clubs in German football. In February, the Bochum team scored dream goal after dream goal against FC Bayern and in the end presented their home fans with a sensational 4:2 victory over the champions. On the last matchday, there was another such highlight, just in time for the club to stay in the relegation zone.
After three games without a win, VfL scored a furious 4:3 victory in Dortmund. The Bochum side defied two penalty kicks and a three-goal haul from Erling Haaland, and once again proved their morale. After an early 2:0 lead, Haaland turned the game in BVB’s favour. Thomas Reis’ team came back, however, and turned the game around again for the final three points.
Bochum facts & analysis
– 12th place in the Bundesliga, 39 points from 32 games.
– Last win 4:3 in Dortmund
– Previously only 3 games in a row without a win and without a goal
Bielefeld form & balance check
The Arminia have not yet given up hope of staying in the relegation zone. Nevertheless, with two matchdays to go, things don’t look particularly good for Bielefeld and they are definitely dependent on shooting assistance. FC Bayern, for example, should not lose against Stuttgart, otherwise things will quickly look bad for Arminia. If VfB wins in Munich and Bielefeld fails to win in Bochum, relegation is already a done deal. A win on Friday is therefore a must, but Arminia are now winless in nine games and have only picked up two points in this period.
Will Bielefeld pull off a miracle?
A last-ditch coaching change hardly helped either. Frank Kramer was sacked after the defeat against Bayern, and his successor and previous goalkeeping coach Marco Kostmann picked up just one point from the following two games. In the 1:3 in Cologne, nothing was to be gained, in the subsequent home match against Hertha, the late 1:1 equaliser by Nilsson at least saved the draw. However, Bielefeld desperately needed more in the clash with their direct rivals from Berlin, so Arminia are now on the brink of relegation.
Bielefeld facts & analysis
– 17th place in the Bundesliga, 27 points from 32 games.
– Last played 1:1 against Hertha
– Winless for 9 games, only 2 points in that period
Predicted line-up – last updated 4 May 2022
Bochum coach Thomas Reis could leave his successful starting eleven from the Dortmund game unchanged. However, Bella-Kotchap and Soares could return in defence, while Löwen, Osterhage and Tesche are also options in midfield. The attacking line has remained unchanged twice recently, with Zoller, Blum, Locadia and Antwi-Adjei the first alternatives here.
Bielefeld coach Kostmann made a few changes to his team recently. Ince, Hack, Krüger and Castro are candidates for the starting eleven, as is Vasiliadis on the double six instead of Kunze. The line-up of the back four remains open for the time being, and much depends on the fitness of Brunner and Pieper, who have been injured recently. Should they not be able to play, De Medina and Ramos will be available.
