Bayern Munich vs. VfB Stuttgart
On the 33rd matchday of the Bundesliga, FC Bayern have their last home game of the 2021/22 season coming up. For the Munich team, the points awarded there are no longer important, but for their relegation-threatened opponents from Stuttgart, they are all the more important. The match will kick off early on Sunday evening at 17:30.
The points are not important to the home side, but an impressive record could be broken in the final spurt of the season. Two matchdays before the end of the season, Bayern have 93 goals in the Bundesliga, the best ever being 101. In the first half of the season, however, Nagelsmann’s team scored an impressive nine goals in their clashes with Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg. If that happens again in the second half of the season, there will be 102 goals after 34 matchdays, which would result in an average of exactly three goals per game.
However, this is by no means to be assumed, as VfB Stuttgart must not lose in Munich under any circumstances if they still want to have a chance of staying in the relegation zone. So a resounding victory is not necessarily to be expected. Whether we think the Swabians can even win a point and what we think about this game, you can read now in our Bayern vs Stuttgart tip.

Bayern Form & Balance Check
Fc Bayern didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory last weekend. Game one after the championship had been determined early on was lost 3-1 at FSV Mainz 05, who had previously been winless five games in a row. Both for the performance and for the subsequent short holiday of some players on Ibiza, the Munich team was criticised from several sides during the week. Among others, Hertha coach Felix Magath commented on this issue.
In addition to saying “I definitely wouldn’t allow something like that”, he added about the Mainz game: “The season goes to the last matchday for all teams and I don’t know why a team can then say: ‘We won’t play the season to the end and call it a day three matchdays earlier.’ That doesn’t serve the Bundesliga and it doesn’t serve the competition,” said the 68-year-old.
Are Bayern experiencing déjà vu?
The appropriate reaction to the criticism would now be to play a concentrated game against VfB Stuttgart, without giving the impression that the team is “just” doing some kind of service, as Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann put it a few days ago. Statistically, at least, it looks pretty good for that. 18 of the past 19 Bundesliga duels with VfB have gone to the Munich side. The only exception was the clear 1:4 home defeat on matchday 34 of the 2017/18 season, when FC Bayern – how could it be otherwise – were already established as German champions.
Bayern facts & analysis
– 75 points from 32 games
– Last lost 1:3 at FSV Mainz 05
– 92 goals after 32 games – 101 goals are season record
– Won 18 of last 19 Bundesliga duels with Stuttgart
Stuttgart form & balance check
The air is getting thinner and thinner for VfB Stuttgart in the relegation battle. If the away match in Munich is lost, direct class preservation is definitely no longer possible on the last matchday, even if Berlin, who are four points away, also lose their home match against Mainz on Saturday. In that case, Bielefeld and Stuttgart would play out the relegation play-off between them, with the Swabians having a much better starting position. They currently have a two-point lead over Arminia and play Cologne at home on matchday 34, while Bielefeld have to play Leipzig away on the season finale.
5th league change in 7th year?
Although VfB will be underdogs against the record champions, the Munich side has lost an unusually large number of points against teams ranked eighth and above. In addition to 13 wins, there have already been two draws and an impressive five defeats against these teams.
The current form, however, does not point to a sense of achievement. Since 5 March, VfB have drawn exactly every other match. After the intervening games in March were still won (3:2 each against Gladbach and Augsburg), the last two games that did not end in a draw were both lost (0:2 against Dortmund and at Hertha BSC). So statistically speaking, after the draw against Wolfsburg, it’s the turn of another defeat. The fifth change between Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga in the seventh year is becoming more and more likely at VfB.
Stuttgart facts & analysis
– 29 points from 32 games
– Last played 1:1 against Wolfsburg
– Facing 5th league change in 7th year
– Winless for 5 games
Predicted line-up – last update on 6 May 2022
The defeat against Mainz didn’t matter, but if FC Bayern now lose against Stuttgart as well, they will probably have to face accusations of distorting the competition. That’s why we expect the best possible line-up from the Munich side. Compared to our eleven, Sané, Goretzka, Tolisso, Davies, Nianzou or Choupo-Moting could still start. Only right-back Sarr is missing due to injury. Pavard’s fitness for action is still questionable. Otherwise, Stanisic might be available as a replacement.
There are not many question marks at VfB. Instead of Führich, Thommy, Förster or Mangala could also play from the start, which would probably entail a change of system. Otherwise, there should be no surprises. Stenzel, Mola, Ahamada, Nartey, Silas, Sankoh and Meyer are still missing due to injury.
🗣️ @J__Nagelsmann on personnel: “It looks good, we have 24 players in training today. We had a couple of players banged up, Josh, Phonzie and Jamal, but it’s all good there. We will also give two players to the U23. “FCBVfB MiaSanMia pic.twitter.com/H3ORkrhro9
