Bayern Form & Balance Check
Bayern have lost some of their sovereignty in the second half of the season. Apart from the two games against Cologne and Hertha, the Munich side have struggled in each of their competitive games since the turn of the year, even bottom side Fürth managed to secure a half-time lead at the Allianz Arena a few weeks ago.
The defeats against Gladbach and Bochum as well as the draw in Salzburg in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 also come from this period. When the season enters the hot phase in the coming weeks, the FCB should have remedied all its problems.
Defence continues to cause concern
One of those problem areas recently has been the fragile defence. Before the last match against Frankfurt, the Munich team conceded eight goals in four competitive matches, with fast-paced counter-attacking players causing the record champions particular problems. Leverkusen also have these in abundance, but the Bavarians found functional countermeasures in their 5:1 victory in the first leg.
The game in Frankfurt last Saturday also gives hope, at least on paper, as the Munich side managed to go nil up for the first time in five games in their 1-0 win. On closer inspection, however, this was mainly thanks to Frankfurt’s poor use of chances. The Bavarians also missed a succession of top-class chances before wild card Leroy Sané redeemed his team with the goal of the day.
Bayern facts & analysis
– Top of the Bundesliga, 58 points.
– Most recently won 1:0 in Frankfurt
– In the second half of the season with 2 defeats from 7 games already as many as in the entire first half
Leverkusen form & balance check
The Leverkusen side once again have a score to settle. Florian Wirtz already announced before the second leg at BVB that he wanted to take revenge for the first leg. Bayer succeeded impressively, and now they want to do the same against Munich. The Werkself was defeated 1:5 in the first leg, the first half (0:5) was an absolute lesson for the record champions. Above all, the Leverkusen defence did not deserve its name on this day, Bayer must continue to find a better balance between the explosive offence and a stable defence.
Wirtz with gala performance
But the Werkself also made a small step forward in this respect, just like Bayern in the last match. In the 3-0 win against Bielefeld, Leverkusen did not concede a goal for the first time in 14 games. Coach Gerardo Seoane was delighted with a commanding three-goal win, the fifth in the last six games.
A goal from Alario and a brace from Diaby secured the win, but the outstanding man on the pitch was once again Florian Wirtz. The 18-year-old created one great chance after another for his teammates and pulled the strings behind his team’s success in impressive fashion.
Leverkusen facts & analysis
– 3rd place in the Bundesliga, 44 points
– Last win 3:0 against Bielefeld
– 5 wins from last 6 matches
Predicted line-up – last update on 3 March 2022
Bayern will still have to do without Tolisso, Davies and Goretzka due to injury. Neuer is also likely to miss out again despite his return to team training, with Ulreich standing by. Hernandez is missing due to a yellow suspension. Müller should return after his Covid infection, Musiala is another alternative for the starting eleven.
On the Leverkusen side, the injured Schick and Bellarabi are missing. Aranguiz could start again as a more defensive option in place of Demirbay, and Andrich also returns. Paulinho is an alternative to Adli.
