Bayern Munich – SC Freiburg

Matchday 2 in European competitions is over and that means matchday 7 in the Bundesliga is upon us. In the middle Sunday match, two teams will meet who competed in the Champions League and the Europa League respectively during the week. But even if on paper two top teams from the past season meet, the omens before the match are different. The hosts from Munich are once again playing their way back to the top and are in third place in the league after six games. Freiburg, on the other hand, won only three of their first six games and thus remain in eighth place in the table.

The Breisgauers’ greatest hope therefore probably lies in the recent history of the two teams. The last time the FCB and SCF met in Bavaria’s capital, the Freiburgers tripped up the record champions in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. Last April, the Breisgauers surprisingly won in Munich and thus destroyed Bayern’s triple chances.

Bayern Form & Balance Check

The pre-season cup exit against upcoming opponents Freiburg was Thomas Tuchel’s first bitter disappointment as Bayern coach. At the end of the last season, however, the 50-year-old still secured the championship with his new team, albeit somewhat fortunately.

In the new season, things are looking a little better for the record champions in terms of results than in the last second half of the season, even if not all the wheels are in mesh yet. In the league so far, the FCB is in sixth place with 14 points after six games and is coming off a 2-2 draw against Leipzig the previous week. On the European stage, Bayern also picked up their second win in their second game during the week in a 2-1 win in Copenhagen.

Tel continues to score

The winning goal for Bayern at Parken Stadion in Copenhagen on Wednesday was once again youngster Mathys Tel. The 18-year-old came on in the 77th minute and then scored in the 83rd minute of the game to make it 2-1. And it wasn’t the first time the Frenchman had got his name on the scoresheet despite limited game time.

The attacker has only played a total of 293 minutes for Bayern in all competitions this season. In this relatively short playing time, Tel has already contributed six goals and one assist. This means that the young striker is involved in a Bayern goal every 42 minutes. With this quota, Tel is naturally attracting more and more attention and is thus also pushing towards the starting eleven.

Freiburg form & balance check

SC Freiburg finished in fifth place for the second season in a row in the pre-season. So far this season, however, the Breisgauers have yet to find the form they showed in pre-season. However, after three winless games in a row, Freiburg finally secured a victory again the previous week.

Last Sunday, the SCF defeated FC Augsburg in their home Europa-Park Stadium and climbed back up to eighth place in the table. In the Europa League, however, the Breisgau side conceded their first defeat of the season on Thursday when they lost 2-1 to Conference League winners West Ham United.

Stable defence

After conceding nine goals in two games in between, including a 5-0 defeat to VfB Stuttgart and a 4-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund, SC Freiburg’s defence has strengthened again. In the last two games they kept the nil at the back and with three to-nil wins in a row Freiburg would already set the record under coach Christian Streich.

The young goalkeeper Noah Atubolu looked much more solid than in the previous games. During the week, however, the 21-year-old, who played for Freiburg’s second team in the 3rd division in the pre-season, did not look good when conceding both goals against the Hammers. Against the FCB, the keeper now wants to rise above himself again.

For Bayern, we don’t expect many changes in the starting eleven. Leon Goretzka, however, could move back into the starting line-up for the record champions. Mathys Tel, on the other hand, will probably be back on the bench for the start of the match.

For Freiburg, we expect a three-man defence again against the record champions on Sunday. In the centre of attack, Lucas Höler, who scored the winning goal in the last visit to Munich, will operate. Nicolas Höfler, on the other hand, will be missing for the Breisgauer in central midfield due to suspension.
