After the bitter elimination in the DFB Cup, FC Augsburg continue in the Bundesliga next weekend with a home match against VfB Stuttgart. Kick-off is at the WWK Arena on Sunday afternoon at 15:30.
With a win against VfB, Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl would have every reason to celebrate. For him, it would be his 50th Bundesliga victory as coach of FCA. In the table, both teams currently do not find themselves where they would like to be. FCA are in 16th place after nine games with just six points and are already four points behind 14th place. In the last four games, Andre Hahn & Co. have added just one point to their points tally. VfB have exactly four points more on their account and are currently 13th in the table. In contrast to their upcoming opponents, the Swabians are clearly on the rise after four games without defeat.

The hosts just can’t get away from it in the Bundesliga. After the 1-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 5, many FCA supporters certainly thought that things would finally start to look up in the table. Since then, however, things have tended to get worse. This was followed by the 3:0 defeat at SC Freiburg, the 2:1 defeat at BVB and the 1:1 against Arminia Bielefeld on the penultimate matchday. Last Friday, the Fuggerstädter finally wanted to get their long-awaited second win against favourite opponents Mainz, but once again nothing came of it.
FCA concede a lot of early goals
On the contrary – FC Augsburg even let themselves be shown up in Mainz. After only 15 minutes, FSV were already 2:0 in the lead and in the 26th minute, Jonathan Burkhardt already ensured the early decision with the 3:0. It was not the first time that Markus Weinzierl’s team got off to the worst possible start. Augsburg have already conceded six goals in the opening quarter of the Bundesliga season, at least twice as many as any other team.
The offensive department then simply lacks the quality to come back in earnest after such setbacks. With only five goals in nine games, Augsburg (together with Arminia Bielefeld) have the worst offensive performance in the Bundesliga. The DFB Cup was no help to Augsburg’s self-confidence either. There, the Fuggerstädter lost to VfL Bochum in a penalty shootout on Wednesday. Unlucky was newcomer Arne Maier, who was the only shooter not to score.

Stuttgart form & balance check
The visitors from Stuttgart have been anything but satisfied with their start to the season, but have at least been able to significantly reduce the number of defeats recently. After two defeats in the first three games, they only lost one more in the last six games. Most recently, the goalless 0:0 against Bochum was followed by a 3:1 home win over TSG Hoffenheim, before VfB drew with both Borussia Mönchengladbach (1:1) and Union Berlin (1:1). The Swabians have an 18-year-old Dane to thank for the point gained against Union last weekend.
Faghir the new striker hope?
Wahid Faghir moved from Vejle BK to VfB in the summer and has had his first taste of Bundesliga action on the last two matchdays. In the home match against Union, he repaid the trust with an extremely important goal. In the 93rd minute he scored the 1:1 for his Stuttgart team, who had to play shorthanded from the 57th minute on. Thus, the VfB remained unbeaten for the fourth time in a row. Against Augsburg, this series should be continued, ideally with a win instead of a draw. The Swabians have already drawn three times away from home. These three draws came in the last three away games. Stuttgart have never drawn more than four away games in a row in the Bundesliga.

A number of positions are questionable at FC Augsburg. Instead of Gruezo, Strobl or Dorsch could also play on the six. In addition to Finnbogason, Zeqiri is also available at forward. At left back, either Iago or Pedersen could start. Niederlechner and Uduokhai are missing due to injury.
