After the match day is before the match day. Next Friday, the Bundesliga will enter its sixth match weekend, and once again, we can look forward to some exciting games. The first groupings within the table have already formed after five games, and it is now of enormous importance for the individual teams to score the necessary points in order not to lose touch with their own ambitions.
A team that is still clearly underperforming will open the matchday on Friday evening. FC Augsburg will host the guests from Gladbach at their home stadium. The Fuggerstädter are currently at the bottom of the table and need to score points to escape the danger zone. Gladbach has a little less pressure on its shoulders after last weekend’s victory, but will want to continue its positive trend. Augsburg form & record check
Augsburg played very good football last season, but has not been able to take this form into the new season. In the opening game, they drew at home against Werder Bremen and in the following games they lost to Heidenheim, Mainz and Leipzig and have only beaten promoted St. Pauli once so far. The 4-0 defeat to RB last weekend confirmed the mid-level crisis in which Augsburg currently finds itself.
With four points, they are currently in 15th place, but are only three points away from last place. In theory, it is possible that they will be at the bottom of the table on the next match day.
Weak defense
A particular shortcoming in Augsburg’s game is their work against the ball. They still seem to have enormous problems in their backward movement and generally on the defensive, despite new signings like Marius Wolf. In the first five games, they conceded 14 goals, making them the third-worst defense in the league.
Only Hoffenheim (15) and Kiel (17) have a worse record. In addition, Augsburg have not kept a clean sheet in their last ten games across the season and have conceded a total of 28 goals in these ten games.
Augsburg facts & analysis
- 15th place
- Last game lost 0:4
- Only one win in five games
Gladbach Form & Record Check
After a difficult last season, Borussia also got off to a rather mixed start this season. In the opening game, they were beaten 3-2 at home by the reigning champions, after which their first victory followed against weak Bochum.
After that, Gladbach conceded two defeats against Stuttgart and Frankfurt before winning 1-0 against Union Berlin last weekend thanks to a goal scored in the final minutes. With these points, they are currently in eleventh place, with everything still possible both up and down.
Auswärtstrend
In the season so far, Borussia have one win and one defeat from two away games. The next game will decide which way this trend will go. Last season, Gerardo Seoane’s team were rarely dangerous away from home.
With just two wins, the same number of points as the team relegated to the second division, Darmstadt, seven draws and eight defeats, they finished 13th in the away table. It is important that they get a good result in the next game to avoid falling back into old patterns.
Gladbach facts & analysis
- Eleventh place
- Last game won 1-0
- Two wins from five games
Augsburg will presumably start in a 3-4-2-1 again. Jess Thorup will have to do without striker Essende (red card) again, but Tietz will take his place. We don’t expect any major personnel changes compared to the last league game against RB Leipzig. Kabadayi and Mounié are definite options for the offense, but will probably only come off the bench at first.
Gladbach will also start under Gerardo Seoane in a 4-2-3-1 without any major personnel changes. Keeper Omlin will probably have to sit this one out as well, with Nicolas standing between the posts for him. The use of winger Ngoumou is also in question, as he had to come off injured in the last game. If he doesn’t get fit in time, scorer Cvancara is ready to go.
Augsburg – Gladbach head to head & statistics
FC Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach have met 28 times in the past. 26 of these games were in the Bundesliga, and they played each other twice in the second division. The statistics of these duels are highly balanced. Nine times the Augsburg team took home the three points, ten times Gladbach managed this feat. In that time, there were nine games that ended in a draw. In the last encounter, Gladbach was unable to capitalize on their home advantage and lost 2-1 at home.
