FC Augsburg vs. SC Freiburg
On the 1st matchday of the Bundesliga we can look forward to a few footballing treats. Of course, there must also be a few matches of less general interest in return and one of these is certainly the clash between FC Augsburg and SC Freiburg, which kicks off on Saturday at 15:30 in the WWK Arena.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich celebrated his debut as a Bundesliga coach against Augsburg more than ten years ago and was also able to celebrate his first victory (January 2012 with 1:0). Since then, the 57-year-old has not only established the club in the Bundesliga, but even led it to the Europa League. With the double burden, however, a rather unusual task now awaits him and his team.
But before the English weeks start at the beginning of September, there are a few important games in the Bundesliga. What we think about the opening duel with FC Augsburg and what predictions we would make for this match is now revealed in our Augsburg vs Freiburg tip.

Augsburg Form & Balance Check
Fc Augsburg kick off their 12th consecutive Bundesliga year on Saturday, making them one of only eight clubs to have been in the German top flight without interruption since 2011. Year after year, the Fuggerstädter belong to the narrower circle of relegation candidates, but have so far always managed to leave at least three clubs behind them after 34 match days. Last season, too, FCA once again did not impress with beautiful football, but at least with a certain effectiveness. Especially in front of the home crowd, Augsburg are very difficult to play against, last season they scored almost twice as many points there (25) as in the away games (13).
Maaßen in front of first professional station
This season, FCA is even the bookmakers’ number one relegation candidate – even ahead of VfL Bochum, who now face the famous difficult second year after promotion. One reason for this is certainly the appointment of Enrico Maßen as coach. He was very successful with BVB’s second team, but has no professional experience to show for it. Naturally, the 38-year-old is already looking forward to his Bundesliga debut. “I’m not nervous, but I feel a healthy tension. I’m fired up for the first game and hope for a full stadium!”
The cup match at regional league side BW Lohne doesn’t say much about the state of the team yet. Arne Maier gave FCA the lead shortly after the change of ends, before Jensen, Niederlechner and Malone added three more goals. The team struggled forward for a long time, but defensively (19:3 shots) allowed almost nothing. Augsburg will probably present a similar picture again this Bundesliga season.
Augsburg facts & analysis
– 12th Bundesliga season in a row.
– Last season almost twice as many points scored at home (25) as away (13)
– New coach Maaßen about to make his Bundesliga debut
Freiburg Form & Balance Check
Fc Augsburg start their 12th Bundesliga season in a row, while FC Freiburg are still participating in Germany’s top division for the 7th time in a row – a new club record. Under the leadership of Christian Streich, the Breisgau club has undergone a great development and has worked its way up the ladder step by step, especially in the last few years. During this period, the SCF has repeatedly made clever transfers, but at the same time can also rely on a few long-established players. Roland Sallai, Lucas Höler, Nicolas Höfler and Christian Günter, among others, have been an integral part of the team for many years.
Last season, Freiburg even played a historically good season. The Black Forest side reached the final of the DFB Cup for the first time and, with a strong 6th place in the Bundesliga, also made the 5th European Cup participation in the club’s history perfect. In order not to run on fumes sooner or later due to the imminent double burden, the squad was properly upgraded in the summer.
New additions can be seen
With Daniel-Kofi Kyereh from FC St. Pauli, the SCF has signed probably the best player of the past second division season. Ritsu Doan is already a household name for most Bundesliga fans from Bielefeld times. In view of his free-kick winner in the cup overtime against Kaiserslautern, he seems to fit in well with Freiburg’s strengths. Last season, the Black Forest side scored 24 times from a standard situation – the best figure in the Bundesliga. The signing of Matthias Ginter also made up for the painful departure of central defender Nico Schlotterbeck. Striker Michael Gregoritsch replaces the departing Ermedin Demirovic.
Freiburg facts & analysis
– 7th Bundesliga season in a row – club record.
– Last season 24 goals after standards – best value in Bundesliga
– Last 3 duels with Augsburg all won
Predicted line-up – last update on 4 August 2022
FCA will most likely start the game in a 4-4-2-1 system. The only question is who will play alongside Arne Maier in the centre and who will occupy the forward line. We expect Elvis Rexhbecaj and Florian Niederlechner next to Andre Hahn. Other options would be Frederik Jensen and newcomer Ermedin Demirovic.
For the Breisgau side, Kilian Sildillia could possibly play for the injured Lukas Kübler. Otherwise, the only question is whether Roland Sallai or Woo-yeong Jeong will start at right back. Newcomers Ritsu Doan and Michael Gregoritsch will start in attacking midfield and forward respectively.
